Scout Renovates Monroe Elementary Pond/Garden for Eagle Project

The pond outside Monroe Elementary has suffered vandalism; Chris Borg and students from Troop 8 were cleaning it up on Friday.

For his Eagle Scout project, 17-year-old Hinsdale Central senior Chris Borg and his Troop 8 of Hinsdale were at Monroe Elementary School on Friday repairing a pond and garden outside the school used for students' science curriculum, The Doings Hinsdale reports.

“The pond was vandalized last year,” Borg told the paper. “Someone took a stick and punctured the pond liner, so the water has been leaking... It takes about eight years for the lily pads to grow. They’re fairly rare."

According to the paper, Borg and co. were draining and restoring the pond, weeding and placing paving stones through the garden and renovating a low-ground storage shed dilapidated from collecting runoff.

They will return on Saturday for the second half of their project, the paper said.
