Appraiser Suspected in Theft of $20K in Jewelry

SATURDAY, AUG. 31

Burglary to Motor Vehicle

Someone stole a purse from an unlocked vehicle while it was parked in a driveway. The incident occurred sometime between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on the 400 block of North Monroe Street, police said. The purse contained $200 cash, a driver's license, a social security card and credit cards. A case is pending.


THURSDAY, AUG. 29

$20K in Jewelry Taken From Home

A known suspect stole about 10 pieces of fine jewelry from a woman on the 200 block of East 9th Court. The incident occurred between noon and 5 p.m. back on Feb. 3, but was reported Aug. 29 after the woman found empty jewelry boxes, according to police. 

The woman initially invited the suspect to her house to appraise the jewelry. She sold the suspect several pieces of jewelry, but then other pieces were missing, police said. The preliminary estimated value of all the stolen jewelry is $20,000, Deputy Police Chief Mark Wodka said. A case is pending.

TUESDAY, AUG. 27

Woman Suspected of Deceptive Practice

A female suspect made purchases on the afternoons of Aug. 12 and Aug. 18 using personal checks on a closed account, according to police. The purchases totaled $252.87. The purchases were made at businesses on the 700 block of North York Road.
