The accident occurred around 3 p.m. Zacharia, who was alone in his 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer, was traveling southbound on Garfield at the time of the accident. He struck the fire hydrant hard enough to dislodge it, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said. The hydrant struck the other vehicle, which was approaching Garfield on Ulm Place, as did the victim's car.

Wodka said nobody in the second vehicle required medical attention.

Zacharia was unresponsive when officers arrived on the scene. Hinsdale Fire Department paramedics took him to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, Wodka said, where he was pronounced dead.

"The contributing factor to this the crash has not yet been determined," Wodka said.

Police are waiting on the results of an autopsy from the DuPage County Coroner's Office. Wodka said that report is expected to give more insight into why the victim lost control of the vehicle and what the cause of his death was.

DuPage County’s regional investigative task force Felony Investigative Assistance Team (FIAT) is investigating the accident, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
