The three buildings at 227-231 Burlington Avenue in Clarendon Hills have become an "attractive nuisance" and could be coming down soon.
The Village of Clarendon Hills has gotten permission to demolish three vacant Burlington Avenue buildings near downtown Clarendon Hills, director of community development Dan Ungerleider said at Monday’s Village Board meeting. A DuPage judge has ruled the village has the right to tear down the buildings at 227-231 Burlington, which have become an “attractive nuisance” for vandals, according to village manager Randy Recklaus, and overall unsafe places. “That thing has to come down,” Recklaus said of the stretch of buildings. Ungerleider, who referred to the buildings as a “blight on that area,” said the village is currently working with its engineering firm on getting an asbestos report while planning and reviewing bids for the potential …

Listen to Patch's one-on-one interview with Derek Berg, who owns Clarendon Hills Music Academy and just launched the online Music Coach Magazine.
Derek Berg said that to successfully teach music, you need to have passion and purpose. Chat with the owner of Clarendon Hills Music Academy about his theories on music coaching, and you'll see he has those two P's. I sat down with Berg, a 38-year-old Hinsdale native who now lives in Plainfield, to talk about his school, his style as a music teacher, and his newest venture, Music Coach Magazine, a free online magazine he's launching this month. "We cover everything from music business coaches to music instrument coaches," Berg wrote in an email describing the magazine. "In the first addition we have landed interviews with everyone from Scott Houston (PBS Piano Guy) to Bob Baker (well known author and music marketing coach)." Listen to the…

Two sisters and their mom operate Vintage Confections, which ships hard candy all over the world but only recently opened its first retail location in the former Jennycakes space downtown.
Sugar, water and corn syrup are all one really needs to make hard candy, but there’s a lot more that goes into it at Vintage Confections. “It’s an old-fashioned process that we have updated to current times,” said co-owner Heather Kelly, who with sister Cheryl Carr opened in November the custom-made lollipop business’ first commercial space at 102 S. Prospect Ave. in Clarendon Hills. “We put a lot of spin on it.” That “spin,” which shows up in Vintage Confections’ translucent lollipops that at their core feature pictures of planets, cartoon characters, even the Hinsdale Central Red Devils logo, has gotten the Darien natives’ business international attention. Kelly started Vintage Confections in 2008, making different kinds candy in, and …

The rink would be a temporary use for 1923 Walker Ave., though an extended cold-weather streak is needed first.
Staff of the village and park district in Clarendon Hills are partnering to put up an ice rink downtown. Village of Clarendon Hills community development director Dan Ungerleider said this week he was working on an agreement with the owner of the property at 1923 Walker Ave., the large, open space behind Scapa Italian Kitchen, that would allow the Clarendon Hills Park District to put up a temporary ice-skating rink in an effort to attract residents downtown. "It just seems like a natural fit," Ungerleider said. Village manager Randy Recklaus commended Ungerleider's idea at Monday's village board meeting. "It will be a fun thing that is also helpful to downtown," Recklaus said. The park district, which puts up similar skating rinks during …

Head to area stores and you'll see that it's already beginning to look a lot like Christmas 2012 in and around the village. All kinds of gift ideas are out there. For totally local, you can get to Tigers & Tulips, Stockholm Objects, or Zabler Jewelers to find a one-of-a-kind gift in the heart of Hinsdale or Clarendon Hills. Maybe the big box stores are your thing? Walmart has already announced it is offering layaway again this year, with the iPad and HP Ultrabook-based laptops on the list of eligible purchases. The store has changed the policy on its open fee, which is kept if you ultimately can't pay for the item or refunded as a Walmart gift card when the item is fully paid off. That fee — or credit — has been increased from $5 to $15. …
