Danny Thomson on Bryan 'Beanie' Bateman: 'I Couldn't Have Gotten This Far Without Him'

An Olympic trial qualifier is one of the students who say the late Hinsdale South swim coach was much more than just a coach.

Bryan "Beanie" Bateman was not an average swim coach, not according to his students or others who knew him. When Patch ran a story about a plaque that had been commissioned in the late Hinsdale South Swim Club coach's honor, former students responded to share their memories about the man who was head coach there for five years. Bateman had epilepsy and was driving home from a swim practice in December of 2009 when he had a seizure, lost control of the car and struck a tree. Bateman had been a competitive swimmer for more than 17 years, before becoming a swim coach. The Hinsdale Central grad retired from competitive swimming in 2001, an 11-time state champion, 7-time state record holder, and two-time 20 and Under National Champion, with one…

Boys Swimming: Danny Thomson Breaks Own Record in 500 Free

The Red Devils finished in fourth place as a team during the two-day state meet in Evanston.

Hinsdale Central senior Danny Thomson broke an IHSA state record for the second straight day by swimming a 4:18.86 in the 500-yard freestyle Saturday, nearly one-half second better than the 4:19.28 he swam during Friday's prelims, according to the IHSA website. Thomson's Saturday time was more than two seconds better than the record 4:21.04 time he swam in the 2011 finals.  Thomson also took first place in the 200-yard freestyle for the second straight year with a time of 1:37.47 Saturday.   As a team, Hinsdale Central finished fourth behind first-place New Trier, second-place Naperville North, and third-place Warren.  Other Red Devils who qualified for Saturday's finals were junior Eddie Mapel, who finished sixth in the 100-yard …

Boys Swimming: Danny Thomson Leads Crowd of Red Devils into State Meet

The only Hinsdale Central senior to qualify is the defending state champ in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle.

After setting two pool records in a drag suit at the York Sectional Feb. 18, Hinsdale Central senior swimmer Danny Thomson has been able to take it a little easier in preparation for this weekend's state meet. Instead of swimming the approximately 10,000 yards a day head coach Corky King demands of his guys during the regular season, Thomson’s been swimming 2,000 to 3,000 yards each day to relax his muscles. When Saturday comes, his head, arms, and legs will be shaved and he’ll wear a skin-tight “jammer” suit instead of the baggy, mesh drag suit he’s worn all season. Thomson, the defending state champion in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, said all the physical advantages will be there for him to drop time. “As long as you have the …

Hinsdale Central's Thomson Named FOX Chicago's "Prep Star of the Week"

The senior Hinsdale Central swimmer led his team to a West Suburban Silver title on Feb. 4.

Hinsdale Central senior Danny Thomson was named FOX Chicago's "Prep Star of the Week" Friday after the defending state champion helped the Red Devils win their 12th West Suburban Silver Conference title in 13 years on Feb. 4. FOX called the honor "a salute to the finest high school swimmer in the state of Illinois." Thomson is the defending state champion and state record-holder in the 500-yard freestyle and defending state champion in the 200-yard freestyle. As Patch previously reported, Thomson will swim at Stanford next year.  According to The Doings Hinsdale, it was Hinsdale Central's fourth straight boys swimming conference title under head coach Corky King and its 41st title overall. The meet was held at Downers Grove North High …

HC Swim Coach: Hard Work Now Brings Fast Times Later

It's all about practice for Hinsdale Central, who returns a two-time state champion from last season's team.

For Hinsdale Central boys swim coach Corky King, there’s a difference between swimming hard and swimming fast during the regular season. “When I have a swimmer that swims fast, it bothers me; I get worried,” said King, who recently began his 13th season leading the Red Devils. “I think, ‘Did we not work hard enough this week?’” The Hinsdale Central boys swim and dive team season began Dec. 3 with a dual meet win at Naperville Central and continues Friday with a home dual against Downers Grove North. The regular season will run through December, January, and most of February. King’s Red Devils, however, approach the regular season as one long practice leading up to sectionals on Feb. 18 and the state meet Feb. 24-25, where last season’s …
