Last Chance: Walk for Wellness House Scheduled for Sunday

Pre-fundraising for the event has already brought in more than $285,000 for Wellness House.

It's your last chance to sign up for a local event with a local cause. The 2012 Walk for Wellness House will take place Sunday morning at 8 a.m. Both the 3K and 5K run/walks begin and end at Wellness House, 131 N. County Line Rd. in Hinsdale. If you're interested in participating, you can register right here at the Walk for Wellness House website.  After you sign up, you can start finding sponsors and raising funds. According to the registration, Wellness House hopes each participant will collect $250 in donations towards the cancer-support programs offered by the nonprofit. So far, participants have raised $285,457. If you're not interested in running or walking, you can make a general donation to the event here

Patch Picks: Five Nonprofit Groups Making a Difference

The Community House and Wellness Center are two of five organizations working to make life better for us.

Nonprofit organizations are a big part of our community. Here are some in Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills and Burr Ridge that make a difference: 1. The Community House, 415 W. Eighth, Hinsdale The services offered by The Community House are varied. In addition to members in its home base of Hinsdale, this thriving community center serves the residents of Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Oak Brook, Westmont and Willowbrook. The Community House has a counseling department that has provided mental health services to DuPage County residents since 1978, as well as a preschool, youth sports, a program for active adults and a theater troupe called the Community House Players. Wellness House Hosts Day of Remembrance

Even brings together those who have lost loved ones to cancer in the past year.

More than 25 people who lost a loved one to cancer in the past year came together for a day of remembrance on Sunday. Hinsdale's Wellness House held the event to allow people to express their feelings through art and learn about the healing process. "We find that in grieving, the loss can be so powerful, that a person's regular set of coping strategies may not get it all done—address the situation fully," said Michael Williams, a program associate who runs support groups at the Wellness House. "By using expressive arts to create something that captures their feelings of loss and losing loved ones to cancer, it can help in healing and rebuilding." Meet Beverlee Nelson, Wellness House Music Therapist

Beverlee Nelson is piano teacher who shares her talent in many ways throughout our area.

Beverlee Nelson teaches piano in her home—among many other musical endeavors: She currently leads music therapy for cancer patients at the Wellness House in Hinsdale and for seniors at the King-Bruwaert House in Burr Ridge; works as a composer, arranger and recording artist for the Congregation of St. Joseph Ministry of the Arts; and remains self-employed as a professional pianist and piano instructor. She gave me a tour of music's role in her life journey, pointing out what she has accomplished through her love of music. Love of music is the operative phrase: Nelson's mother was a wonderful singer and an inspiration to her family—she was so talented and encouraged her children to get involved in music.
