Hinsdale police reports: July 24-30
MONDAY, JULY 30 An unknown vandal threw a rock through a window of an office in the 500 block of west Chestnut Street between 5 p.m. July 26 and 6:20 a.m. July 30. The damage to the window was valued at $300. SUNDAY, JULY 29 An unknown burglar used a wooden board to shatter a service window and gain access to the Hinsdale Little League concession stand in the 700 block of east Walnut Street between 7 p.m. July 28 and 7 a.m. July 29. The burglar raised a protective shade to enter the stand. The damage to the window was valued at $300. At this time, nothing appears to be missing from the stand. THURSDAY, JULY 5 Clifford J. Van Wormer, of the 100 block of South Vine Street in Hinsdale, was charged with unlawful use of alcohol after the 19-year-old was a passenger in a car stopped by police for a missing tail light at 12:28 a.m. near the intersection of County Line Road and 7th Street. The driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old Hinsdale girl, was cited for driving without a valid license past curfew and with one taillight. Another passenger, also a 16-year-old Hinsdale girl, was cited for being out past curfew. Van Wormer was released to appear in court. Taylor, 19, of 7 E. 57th St. in Hinsdale, was charged with unlawful use of alcohol by a person under 21 after police were called to a residence in the 10 block of East 57th Street when the homeowners found eight known persons under 21, including Taylor, drinking alcohol in the house, according to the Hinsdale Police Department. The Hinsdale Police Department reported four incidents related to underage consumption or possession of alcohol that occurred May 18 and May 19. Three of the incidents occurred near the intersection of 55th Street and Garfield Avenue, where officers were carrying out an ongoing Memorial Day period seat belt enforcement initiative funded with federal money, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said. Wodka said such seat belt initiatives often lead to other charges, such as underage consumption, DUI, and drug possession. The Memorial Day initiative runs through May 28. Theft—In the throws of MegaMillions fever Friday at 12:10 p.m., an unknown suspect stole $21 worth of purchased lottery tickets from a customer at Mobil, 8 W. Chicago Ave., after the customer left the tickets on the counter to go get other items in the store, according to the Hinsdale Police Department. Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said there were no witnesses to the theft; nobody saw a person take the tickets. It turns out none of the tickets were good for the $640 million jackpot. “There are no value to those tickets now other than the paper they’re printed on,” Wodka said. Theft—An unknown suspect allegedly took a $500 laptop from a home in the 5700 block of South Madison Street between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. March 19, according to the Hinsdale Police Department. According to police, the suspect may be someone who had authorized access to the residence during the above timeframe, a period during which the victim was not home. The case is currently pending. Burglary to motor vehicle—An unknown suspect allegedly entered an unlocked vehicle and stole a wallet containing $300 cash, as well as several credit and gift cards, while the vehicle was parked in the victim’s driveway in the 400 block of East Chicago Avenue between 6 p.m. March 17 and 12:20 p.m. March 19. Harassment by telephone—Eugene C. Ognibene, of 2001 Meyers Rd. in Oakbrook Terrace, turned himself in to the Hinsdale Police Department on March 9 after the suspect allegedly made “statements of a harassing nature implying threats” to the safety of his wife, who lives in the 500 block of North Grant Street, between 10 a.m. March 4 and 8:28 p.m. March 7, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said. Ognibene, 42, allegedly made 10 calls to the 44-year-old female victim during the above time frame, one of which contained the threatening statements, Wodka said. Eleven suspects between the ages of 18 and 22 were charged with substance-related offenses between Dec. 17 and Dec. 20, according to the Hinsdale Police Department. In addition to the heroin arrest Patch reported on Tuesday, five young people were charged with underage possession of alcohol, four with possession of cannabis, and one with DUI. Deputy Hinsdale Police Chief Mark Wodka said the increase could be due to the fact that lots of college students are home for winter break. But Wodka also credited increased community and police-officer vigilance since a slew of recent burglaries with two of the catches. “There are a lot more residents that are calling in suspicious behavior,” Wodka said. Two cases of battery were also among crimes recently reported by the Hinsdale Police Department.
Illegal consumption of alcohol—Seven juveniles were observed to be under the influence of alcohol at the Hinsdale Central High School Homecoming Dance on Sept. 24, according to the Hinsdale Police Department. "At each Homecoming, there are usually between one and five citations issued for this offense," Hinsdale Deputy Police Chief Mark Wodka said in an email Tuesday. Wodka said Hinsdale Police officers were on hand at the dance to provide security observed the intoxicated students. All of the suspects—five males and two females—were cited and released to appear in court. Because they are juveniles, Wodka said, their identities will not be released. Thanks for the comment, reallife. For the record, Wodka did not credit the incident you singled out as one that was due to increased vigilance. The ones he credited to vigilance since the burglaries are the heroin arrest detailed in a separate story and one of the cannabis-related incidents.   more ›
