Senator Dick Durbin Introduces Fifth version of the DREAM Act

The bill would allow illegal immigrants to receive financial aid for education and jobs.

On Tuesday evening, Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill., introduced Senate Bill 3992, the fifth version of the DREAM Act, which would allow illegal immigrants to receive financial aid for education and jobs under the federal work-study program. This is the fourth version of the bill since Sept. 29. However, the bill still faces many obstacles for passage. Republicans have stated that they want to first focus on passing a budget and deciding whether to extend Bush era tax cuts before taking on any other issues. Senate Republicans overwhelmingly oppose the bill which would allow illegal aliens to apply for jobs under the federal work-study program. President Barack Obama sent the following tweet Wednesday: "If you agree that passing the DREAM Act is…

District 86 Approves 4 Percent Tax Levy Hike

Increase will bring in about $82 million for the district's 2011 and 2012 fiscal year budgets.

Residents within the boundaries of Hinsdale Township High School District 86 will see an increase in the amount of taxes they owe the district next year.    At Monday's District 86 Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously approved the tentative 2010 real estate property tax levy which will increase the district's property tax revenue by 4 percent. The increase will bring in about $82 million in dollars to be used for the district's 2011 and 2012 fiscal year budgets. On Nov. 1, the board considered a 3.1 percent, 5.7 percent and 4 percent increases in the tax levy. District 86 Business Manager Jeff Eagan said that at Monday's meeting, "the consensus was to move forward with the 4 percent option." Eagan added that the board plans to…

Hinsdale Votes to Increase Village Sales Tax

Money will be used to improve Hinsdale's streets and sewers.

The voters have spoken. After three failed attempts, the referendum to increase the sales tax in Hinsdale from 7.25 percent to 8.25 percent has passed. The money will be used to fund repairs and improvements to Hinsdale's streets and sewers. It was an uphill battle to get this measure passed, and Village Manager Dave Cook says it couldn't have happened without the efforts of concerned members of the community. "A lot of people put a lot of work into getting this passed. It was truly a grassroots effort. I am very happy that it passed," said Cook. John Karstrand, a former president of the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce and current member of the village Economic Development Commission, was one of the champions of the referendum. He led a …

District 86 School Board Considers 4 Percent Tax Levy

Board voted Monday night to consider a levy that would raise $25 to $82 million.

Hinsdale High School Township District 86 is considering whether to levy a 4 percent tax increase to pay for the district's budget for the upcoming school year. Every year, the board must approve a new tax levy to cover the district's budget. During the meeting, Jeffrey T. Eagan, the district's business manager, presented the board with three scenarios. "The goal tonight is to have the board pick one scenario to consider and vote on at the next meeting," said Eagan. 1) The first scenario requested a 3.1 percent tax, which would capture up to $25 million from new construction. 2) The second scenario had the district levying a 5.7 percent tax, which would maintain the current fund balance. 3) The final scenario proposed a 4 percent levy …

Hinsdale President: 'No Hope' of Reaching Goal Without Sales Tax Increase

Cauley makes case for Hinsdale to pass sales tax increase referendum. Residents have mixed feelings.

Hinsdale's village president is asking residents to think about the current condition of roads and sewers in the village when they step in the voting booth in November. Thomas Cauley told attendees of the village board meeting Tuesday night that the village desperately needs to make repairs to its infrastructure—repairs that are part of the village's infrastructure master plan. To make the repairs, Cauley said a one percent increase in Hinsdale's sales tax is needed. Business owners in Hinsdale have mixed feelings about the proposed sales tax increase. "Paying one percent more in sales taxes makes a difference to us, especially when you're selling a high ticket item like a fur coat," said Susie Duboe-Bryant, owner of Hinsdale Furriers, …

Chamber Endorses 1% Hinsdale Sales Tax Increase

The tax increase referendum is on the ballot Nov. 2.

A Village Board referendum to increase the sales tax in Hinsdale from 7.25 percent to 8.25 percent received a boost when the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce voted to endorse the idea. Despite a Sept. 9 endorsement by the chamber and the support of Village President Tom Cauley and the Village Board, the proposal faces an uphill fight. Prior tax-increase referendums have failed at the ballot box three times since November 2006. However, officials feel that the referendum has a better chance this time because, in addition to the proposed sales tax increase, the village also has made budget cuts. Supporters estimate the tax increase would generate $1.5 million annually to be used for improvements in village infrastructure, particularly roads and …
