Ask a Stylist: What Hairstyle is in this Holiday Season?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei tackles hairstyles for the holiday season.

Every so often on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: What's in for holiday hair in 2012? Answer: Holiday hair is fun and 60s inspired this season. With this look you definitely want to show off your neck line and shoulders. Hair is off the face slightly, teased on top, and pulled back into a pony tail. With the pony tail, there are a couple of options. It can be curled, and I'm talking about spiral, large loose curls, or the pony tail can be loosely braided down off the front of one shoulder. I recommend visiting your local beauty supply store and look for clip-in hair pieces. These are …

Ask a Stylist: How Can Men Cover Their Gray Without Going to the Salon?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei gives advice to women whose men want to color their hair, but may bit a bit proud.

Every so often on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: My husband is getting gray and he'd really like to cover it, but I know it would be difficult to get him to even be seen getting haircolor in a salon. Help! Answer: I've got great news! L'Oreal Professional offers a quick and easy discreet color service for men. It can be done at the shampoo bowl and to everyone in the salon it just looks like you are getting shampooed. It takes five minutes or less, and it's called "Cover 5."  Depending on the shade your haircare professional chooses, Cover 5 can what we call smudge hype gray, that means…

Ask a Stylist: Should I Color My Hair Before a Holiday Vacation or After?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei gives insight on the best time to treat your hair around a holiday vacation.

Every so often on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: With the holidays approaching and many people getting away to the beach for vacation, should you get your hair colored and treated before you leave, or wait until you return? Answer: We get this question all the time—especially now! Most people think they should get their hair colored when they come back. But the truth of the matter is you have so much fading and bleaching from the sun that if you wait until you get back to fix it, it's a lot more trouble and expense. Fresh hair color holds up so much better in the sun and is much more …

Ask A Stylist: What Home Remedies Will Protect My Hair This Winter?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei gives some home remedies to help your winter-damaged hair.

Every so often on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: What at-home remedies do you recommend to combat problem hair, especially dry, flyaway hair damaged by the effects of winter? Answer: There seems to be at-home remedies for every ache and pain, and problem hair is no exception. Here are three that I love and that really work: My favorite for deep conditioning is the ripe avocado treatment. Use one very ripe avocado, smash it, much like you would when making guacamole, and apply to freshly shampooed hair. Let it penetrate for 15 to 30 minutes, then rinse. The oils in the avocado nourish …

Ask a Stylist: How Do I Find the Right Hair Brush?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei addresses a tool we all have in our arsenal.

Each week on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  This week's came from a Patch reader. Do you have a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: I have very unruly hair and I am wondering how one should choose the best hair brush for his or her type of hair? Answer: One type does not fit all when it comes to hair brushes. And, in my opinion, selecting the right brush is equally as important as selecting the correct product for your hair. So, not just any brush from the drug store will do! For the past 25 years, I have used only high-quality bore bristle brushes preferably from Italy. The Italians really figured out how to make a brush that …

Ask a Stylist: What's the Best Way to Go Gray?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei talks about graying gracefully.

Each week on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: I've been coloring my hair for years and have decided to let the gray take over. How do you go gray gracefully after you stop coloring your hair? Answer: Excellent question and I am asked that a lot. First, it  depends on whether you're a blonde or brunette. If you're blonde, I recommend start highlighting around your face and bring the color up as light as possible so it's a gradual transition. Try to neutralize the yellow or golden tones, so there won't be a harsh line of outgrowth. For brunette's, start by lightening up the formula a shade …
