Unemployment Rises Nationally, Hinsdale Food Pantry Sees Demand Skyrocket

HCS Family Services says demand for food pantry services has continued to grow, in towns known for their affluence.

In a community like Hinsdale, the word "food pantry" doesn't seem to fit in a landscape populated with multi-million dollar homes. In this economy, however, the food pantry has become essential for many who live here, including some students who attend Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South with more fortunate friends who would not know what a Link Card was, if they saw one. According to a recent report, employment rose far less than expected in May, with U.S. private employers adding only 83,000 workers, and the jobless rate rising to 9.1 percent. This news is the latest in disappointing economic information at a time when some Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills residents already are feeling the strain. According to Kim Stephens, a social worker …

Tom Reasoner was among hundreds of police officers who spent hours on the roofs of Dunkin' Donuts across Chicagoloand Friday.

Hundreds of police officers from all over the Chicago area joined efforts to raise money for Special Olympics Friday, including one who might look familiar to Clarendon Hills residents. Tom Reasoner, who was a police officer in Clarendon Hills for 25 years and police chief for 16, joined the effort as officers across the state camped out on Dunkin' Donuts rooftops from 5 a.m. to around 2 p.m. in their communities. Reasoner, who is now a deputy director at North East Multi-Regional Training, which provides training to law enforcement personnel throughout the Chicagoland area, said he was happy to spend a few hours on the roof of the Bensenville Dunkin' Donuts on Route 83 in order to help a good cause. "As we adopted this charity, we found …

VIDEO: Hinsdale Central Teen Signs With Sharpie, Gives Benefit Concert

At 15 years old, Marirose Weldon is a rising pop star who just signed a deal to be a spokesperson for Sharpie.

She's 15 years old, has two songs on the radio, was named Seventeen Magazine's "Pretty Amazing Kid of the Week" and just became Sharpie's new spokesperson, but that's not the most amazing thing about Hinsdale Central student Marirose Weldon. The amazing thing is the road that took her to where she is today.

VIDEO: Dozens Spin for Young Life

The community came out for a spin-a-thon to raise funds for Hinsdale South youth.

Nearly 100 people woke up early to devote part of their Saturday raising money for an organization that aims to support young people when they need it the most. Hinsdale South Young Life, a faith-based non-profit, provides mentors and activities for students who attend Hinsdale South. The organization held a spin-a-thon at the Five Season Sports Club in Burr Ridge Saturday to raise funds. It cost $50 a person for every 50-minute indoor cycling session. Several riders cycled through for all four sessions. “I know in my past, I haven’t been the goodest of children..and this just gives me somewhere to go," said 15-year-old Hinsdale South student Victoria D'Andrea. “It helped me stay out of trouble.” D'Andrea said she knows a lot of kids in …

VIDEO: Hinsdale Teen Joins 'Token Asian' Team To Race Against Homelessness

The Hinsdale Central student joined a team of adults to race for DuPage County PADS.

Most people don't picture go-karts when they think about helping to reduce poverty. That's not the case for the 125 kart racers who came together to take part in the Drive For 25, a six-hour endurance race, which took place on Sunday to raise money for DuPage County PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter.) Hinsdale Central sophomore Frank Siracusa was one of six junior drivers who took part in the race. He said that he was happy to help. "I'm a very fortunate person. I live in a nice community, and I am able to do things," said Siracusa. "There's people who don't even have a house, so it's hard for me to even imagine, and I'd like to help them out as much as possible." Frank and his father, Frank Siracusa Sr., raised more than $1,200 in …

New Hearing on Objections to Planson's District 86 Candidacy Canceled

District says judge will rule on merits of case March 10.

The electoral board meeting for District 86 that was scheduled for Monday has been canceled. A DuPage County circuit court judge had ordered that on Tuesday the District 86 Electoral Board must meet again regarding objections to Jennifer Planson's candidacy for the school board, according to a Clarendon Hills Doings report. This is because only two members of the electoral board were present Jan. 6, when the board ruled against objections to Planson's candidacy brought by two Oak Brook residents.  Donald O’Neil and Terrence O’Malley objected to Planson's running for the school board on the grounds that she wrote “Hinsdale District 86” on some of the papers, when she applied to run for the school board, rather than the district’s full title…

Burglaries and Thefts in Hinsdale

Hinsdale Police Warn of Daytime Burglar

Police are investigating a string of burglaries that all appear to have the same MO.

Hinsdale Police are investigating a string of burglaries in the area that have occurred since the start of the year and appear to have been committed by the same person. The latest in Hinsdale was committed on Jan. 17 on the 700 Block of South Oak Street. A woman came home to find someone had stolen jewelry, a sterling silver antique tea and coffee set and a set of George Jensen sterling silver flatware, while she was out between 8:50 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. that day. Police say there were no signs of forced entry. "This is the third burglary we've had in a four-week period of time," said Hinsdale Deputy Police Chief Mark Wodka. "The last two appear to be related." The first two burglaries took place on Jan. 4 on the 10 Block of East Birchwood …

Onyx is a six-year-old male cat, who weighs 12.6 pounds. He was abandoned by his owner who moved to Texas. He was found by the owner's son who came to take some things out of his father's home and brought to the Hinsdale Humane Society. "He's a sweet boy," said Jeanine Vaughn, the feline care supervisor at the Hinsdale Humane Society. "He's not a lapcat, but he wants to be near people." Vaughn said that Onyx just wants to be loved and likes to snuggle after he gets to know someone. He is neutered and has lived with two other cats and a dog and reportedly got along well with all of them. Onyx has been sponsored by Eleanor Moculeski in honor of Glenn Bjorkman. Clarendon Hills Police Investigate Arson Case

A family's car was set on fire while it was parked in their driveway on Mohawk Street.

Around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, a Clarendon Hills family woke up to find their car on fire in the driveway of their home on Mohawk Street. "Someone intentionally set the car on fire, and we're looking into the reasons why," said Clarendon Hills Deputy Police Chief Ted Jenkins. The family was in their home on Mohawk Drive when it happened. Homeowner Chris Lind said he had no idea why someone would do this. "Someone broke the window, and threw something inside that started the car on fire," said Lind, owner of the home, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. "My son saw the fire, called the fire department and they showed up," said Lind. The car was still burning when the fire department arrived. "The car was parked fairly close to…
