Rumor About Student Bringing Gun and 'Kill List' to School Not True

Clarendon Hills Police Chief Ted Jenkins said his department got about a dozen calls over the weekend from concerned parents in the wake of the Newtown, CT, school shooting.

Clarendon Hills Middle School officials have determined that a rumor spread about a student's plans to bring to school a gun and "kill list" of peers to shoot on Dec. 21 is unfounded and false, according to The Doings Clarendon Hills. "Apparently, the rumor began after two girls began telling fellow students they heard a boy make threats," The Doings reported. "School officials did investigate a report about a concerning statement being overheard, which included no reference to Dec. 21." District 181 communications director Bridget McGuiggan told Patch the rumor was first spread more than two weeks ago, and the comment in question was an off-the-cuff, heat-of-the-moment comment from the student. McGuiggan said the rumor's proximity to …

As a parent of a third grader at Oak School it's nice to see the emergency plan that the district has in place but read about how the assailant entered the school in Newtown, Conn and i think our school district members need more discussion on how to prevent that from happening here. i think more thought needs to be had on the way the assailant entered Sandy Hook elementary school, of course …   more ›

D181 Board Extends Schuster's Contract, But Not Unanimously

The District 181 Board of Education voted to approve a two-year extension of Superintendent Renée Schuster's contract, but two board members raised concerns and voted against it.

The District 181 Board of Education approved a two-year contract extension for Superintendent Renée Schuster, though not unanimously. Board members voted 4-2 Monday night during a meeting at The Lane School in Hinsdale to approve the contract extension for Schuster, who has headed District 181 administration since 2009 and is currently leading a curriculum overhaul that has often been a topic of board discussion during the last year. Schuster said improving student learning and fiscal responsibility will continue to be her goals going forward. “I think we’ve made good progress and I want to keep that progress going,” she said. Board President Michael Nelson voted in favor of the contract extension along with board members Sarah Lewensohn, …

Jim (or whatever your real name is) - I have missed 5 meetings in 4 years and it has always been due to my primary job required me to be on the road. I resent your comments that have no factual basis. Russell Rhoads   more ›

D181 Board Delays Action on Superintendent's Contract Extension

Superintendent Renée Schuster's two-year extension was put on hold for two weeks after two board members raised concerns about the board's approval process following a late-night executive session Monday.

Board President Michael Nelson had the District 181 Board of Education delay action on an extension of Superintendent Renée Schuster’s contract Monday night after two board members raised concerns about the way the item was drafted and the time that it was being voted on. A motion to execute the two-year contract extension for Schuster, who was been with the district since 2009, came after an executive session that followed a long meeting at Monroe School in Hinsdale. Brendan Heneghan and Yvonne Mayer spoke out against the item after the board returned to open session, which eventually led Nelson to ask that Marty Turek rescind his motion. Heneghan and Mayer said the contract did not include any specific salary numbers beyond the annual …

What happened to having negotiating power? Why is a majority of the board so desperate to keep this superintendent? She has obviously not done a good job addressing the various district issues and is spending our tax money irresponsibly. In no place of business would you approve a contract without reviewing it completely, even if the revisions were pointed out. I am boggled at the fact that a …   more ›
