District 86 Approves 4 Percent Tax Levy Hike

Increase will bring in about $82 million for the district's 2011 and 2012 fiscal year budgets.

Residents within the boundaries of Hinsdale Township High School District 86 will see an increase in the amount of taxes they owe the district next year.    At Monday's District 86 Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously approved the tentative 2010 real estate property tax levy which will increase the district's property tax revenue by 4 percent. The increase will bring in about $82 million in dollars to be used for the district's 2011 and 2012 fiscal year budgets. On Nov. 1, the board considered a 3.1 percent, 5.7 percent and 4 percent increases in the tax levy. District 86 Business Manager Jeff Eagan said that at Monday's meeting, "the consensus was to move forward with the 4 percent option." Eagan added that the board plans to…

Rummage Sale Raises Funds for Family of Fallen Soldier

More than 30 local families donated items to the sale, which raised money for the former Hinsdale Central grad.

Pfc. Gunnar Hotchkin was only 31 when he died in Afghanistan in June, leaving behind a wife and three children. The 1997 Hinsdale Central grad and Naperville resident was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated on the tank he was riding. Hotchkin was the first soldier with Hinsdale roots to have been killed in action since the Vietnam War. Hotchkin's name was added to a new plaque at Memorial Hall last month, remembering the first Hinsdale serviceman to die in the Afghanistan Conflict. "The papers listed Naperville, but Hinsdale was his home," said Hotchkin's mother, Chris, at the ceremony in October.  Hotchkin was an All American swimmer who a member of the swim team at Hinsdale Central. Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills Churches Join Together To Fight Hunger

More than 300 people walked three miles in Sunday's CROP Walk.

About 300 people from Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills took to the streets to help fight hunger on Sunday. Residents took part in the annual 5K CROP Walk through Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills. The event raises about $20,000 a year to eliminate hunger worldwide. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds will be given to HCS Family Services in Hinsdale, which operates two food pantries. Susan Fritz, executive director of HCS Family Services, said she appreciates the generosity of the CROP Walk participants. "The CROP Walk is a wonderful event. It helps our food pantries serve people dealing with poverty [in DuPage County]. Seventy-five percent of the funds will be donated overseas.
