Hinsdale South Pitcher Goes Distance in Win Over Central

A four-run third inning put the Hornets ahead, but they needed a strong finish to hold off the Red Devils.

The score: Hinsdale South 5, Hinsdale Central 4 The way it happened: Senior outfielder Matt Reschke keyed the Hinsdale South offense with a three-run triple in the third inning and senior Mike Rizzo pitched a complete game during the Hornets' home win Tuesday over the Red Devils. Red Devils, Hornets Boys Basketball Remain Positive About Seasons

Hinsdale Central exited the playoffs with an upset loss, while Hinsdale South finished 7-19, but both teams stayed upbeat about their 2013 seasons.

Despite enduring some respective disappointments as their seasons drew to a close, both the Hinsdale Central Red Devils and the Hinsdale South Hornets boys basketball coaches struck an upbeat tone about their year, the Suburban Life reports. Hinsdale Central (18-7) were upset by 12-seed Geneva last Thursday, 55-49, and forced to leave the playoffs earlier than expected, but can fall back on a 12-win streak to start the calendar year and their first West Suburban Silver title since 2000, the paper said. 35 Hinsdale Central Students Honored as National Merit Finalists

National Merit Finalists are now eligible for scholarships from the National Merit Corporation ranging from $500 to full tuition in post-secondary opportunity institutions.

The following is a release from Hinsdale Township High School District 86: Thirty-five students from Hinsdale Central High School and six students from Hinsdale South High School were honored as National Merit Finalists by the National Merit Corporation. This designation is a prestigious honor as these students qualified from the more than 1.5 million juniors nationwide who took the PSAT/NMSQT last fall. Hinsdale Central's Brian Allen Wins State Wrestling Title

The junior beat Neuqua Valley senior Andrew Geers in the 285-pound title match Saturday in Champaign.

Hinsdale Central junior wrestler Brian Allen beat Neuqua Valley senior Andrew Geers, 4-2, in the 3A state final Saturday night at Champaign's Assembly Hall, capping an undefeated season with a state title and giving his school its second individual first-place finish, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The first-ever Hinsdale Central individual wrestling title was won by Brian's older brother, Jack, in 2011, the Sun-Times reports. Read the full Sun-Times story here. $1.7 Million Worth of D86 Summer Projects Planned

The District 86 projects will include main hallway renovations at both campuses and a renovated girls locker room at Hinsdale South.

The year after major construction work took place at both campuses, summer 2013 facilities work at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South is expected to cost District 86 about $1.7 million, according to an administration report discussed at Monday night’s board of education meeting. The cost of the summer’s planned designed construction projects, which include main hall renovations at both schools, an expanded and renovated girls locker room at South, and new exhaust fans in the Central gym, is estimated by District 86 officials to be about $1.1 million, not to exceed $1.6 million. The cost estimate for non-design construction work such asbestos removal, transformer repair, and sidewalk repair is $140,250, and design-only costs like those for…

District 86 hosted a drug symposium on Nov. 7 at Hinsdale South High School that featured several speakers, including DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin, with first-hand knowledge of the dangers of heroin in the suburbs today.

Thirty deaths from heroin overdose have occurred in DuPage County during the last 12 months, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said during an event at Hinsdale South last week. “This is a real epidemic that we’re faced with,” Berlin said. The county’s top prosecutor was one of several speakers who took to the microphone in Darien on Nov. 7 to talk about the prevalence and dangers of heroin at Hinsdale Township High School District 86’s Drug Awareness Symposium. Volleyball: Hinsdale Central, South Play Thursday for Sectional Title

The match begins at 7 p.m. and is being played at Riverside-Brookfield High School.

The Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South girls volleyball teams will play for the Riverside-Brookfield Sectional Title Thursday night after each team won three straight matches during the last nine days. Hinsdale South, the sectional's No. 1 seed, defeated Oak Lawn (25-10, 26-24) in the sectional semifinal Tuesday after beating Argo (25-9, 25-7) and Riverside-Brookfield (25-27, 25-10, 25-23) in regional play on Oct. 23 and Oct. 25. Man Charged With Murder of Hinsdale South Grad Pleads Not Guilty

Juan Cuellar was in court this week, where he pleaded not guilty to all five counts related to the September murder of Joshua Holmes in unincorporated Willowbrook.

A Willowbrook man charged in the shooting death of a Hinsdale South High School graduate has pleaded not guilty. Juan Cuellar denied a five-count murder indictment during an Oct. 22 hearing. He remains held without bond in DuPage County Jail. State Seeks Immunity for Witnesses of Hinsdale South Grad's Murder: Court Watch

Patch catches you up on some of DuPage County's high-profile court cases.

The following are recent developments in notable DuPage County court cases: Willowbrook—Prosecutors in the case of Juan Cuellar, the 23-year-old Willowbrook man accused of shooting to death Hinsdale South graduate Joshua Holmes, have filed paperwork stating they will give immunity to two witnesses who might not otherwise testify to what they know about the killing, court records show. The witnesses, both identified as women, would likely refuse to testify or "produce evidence" for fear of self-incrimination without immunity protection, prosecutors stated in the court filing. Records do not elaborate on the content of their potential testimony. Cuellar remains in DuPage County Jail without bond. He is scheduled for an Oct. 22 hearing. …
