Hinsdale South Student Excels in School, on Ice

Hinsdale South High School student Sarah Warren will represent Team USA in short track speed skating at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Austria.

Life is a balancing act for Hinsdale South High School student Sarah Warren. The avid speed skater also participates in soccer and track and field, and is enrolled in an all honors course-load. “When you throw all that in the mix you do give up some social life,” Warren said. “But you have to put it in perspective.” In January, Warren will have even more on her plate. She is heading to Innsbruck, Austria, to represent Team USA in short track speed skating at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games. She will compete in the 500m and 1000m distances, and the mixed 3000m relay. “I’m very excited,” Warren said of her achievement. She qualified for the the Junior Olympics after competing in the American Cup II in Cleveland in October. Warren has …

Hinsdale South Students Sound Off About Respect

Students give their perspectives on a timeless issue between generations, among peer groups and in society.

A group of 18 Hinsdale South High School seniors in Billson Rasavongxay’s sociology class had the opportunity Friday to share their views about the lack of respect they encounter among themselves, between generations and in society in general. And if the student sampling is any indication of general public sentiment, then we all have our work cut out for us. In response to a student’s comment that “people are just rude to each other,” Rasavongxay posed several questions to the class of eight boys and 11 girls.  “Do you think (a lack of respect) is currently an epidemic? Is it a disease in our society?”  The unanimous response was “yes." Some students added that stories in the media highlighting negative behavior, as well as flawed role …

Carol hit the nail on the head: Lack of respect is universal. I routinely see this out in traffic, with drivers flipping other drivers off or showing absolutely no patience. I happened to be going through a McDonalds drive-thru the other day, and took a couple of seconds to get my money ready in order to pay the cashier. And some woman directly behind me hit the horn! Never seen someone so eager …   more ›

Hinsdale South Students Making ‘Noise’ With Fall Play

The Hinsdale South High School fall production, Noises Off, begins Thursday.

With only one year left before she retires, Pam Baker, the director and drama club advisor at Hinsdale South High School, feels the clock ticking. “I’m trying to do (productions) I haven’t done ever or in a very long time,” she said. And one she has decided to bring back for the Hinsdale South fall play is Noises Off, the slapstick comedy by English playwright Michael Frayn. The British play-within-a-play takes the audience behind the scenes of the trials and tribulations of a group of comedic actors both on stage and off. “I like it because it’s funny,” Baker said. The musical will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, through Saturday, Oct. 29, in the Hinsdale South Auditorium. Tickets are $8 each. Noises Off calls for a smaller …

Football: Hall Powers Hornets Over Willowbrook

Hinsdale South 50, Willowbrook 22. Keontae Hall's four TD's in his final home game gives Hornets their first winning season since 2005 and an at-large bid for the state playoffs.

As far as beginnings go, Hinsdale South’s start against Willowbrook was not memorable. Lucky for them it’s how you finish. Hinsdale South delivered plenty of fireworks in their 50-22 rout to close the regular season.  On the opening kickoff, Willowbrook returner Brandon Smith went all the way in a 90-yard return to put the Warriors (0-9, 0-6) up 6-0. On the ensuing kickoff, the short, high kick bounced backwards in front of receiver Bryant Hayes and the Warriors recovered on the Hornets’ 22. Running back Raphael Garcia scored on a 10-yard run and QB Steven Ferguson scored on an 8-yard QB sneak for a two-point conversion after a false start penalty.  Ninety seconds in, the Hornets (5-4, 4-2) were down 14 to the winless Warriors.  Senior …

Volleyball: Hornets Looking to Repeat 2010 Playoff Success

The veteran Hornets' recent successes in tournaments and a favorable regional draw make another deep playoff run likely.

The Hinsdale South Hornets girls volleyball team is looking to pick up where it left off in 2010. Last year, they fell to Edwardsville in the supersectionals. The Hornets achieved some measure of revenge on Oct. 8 after losing their opening round match to Joliet Catholic. The Hornets bested Edwardsville in the fifth place game in straight sets at the Mizuno Cup at St. Charles East. The Hornets are a veteran team this time around, seasoned by their experiences during their remarkable run last year when they caught fire and blitzed their way through the playoff field. In the regionals they took down Oswego East and in the sectionals they bested rival Hinsdale Central and perennial power Benet in a three-game marathon.  The 2011 Hornets have …

D86 Digest: Student Cell Phone Use Debated

Also: camera and tripod donation accepted; PTAB resolution approved.

Hinsdale Central Principal Michael McGrory updated the Hinsdale Township High School District 86 School Board Monday on the new policy at the school that allows students to use electronic devices, such as cell phones, during non-instructional time, including in hallways between classes and in the cafeteria. McGrory emphasized that the change also covered the use of devices like iPads and tablets. He said the intent of the change was to protect instructional time. “When we looked at this, that was our priority,” he said. “When we made this change, we also increased the consequence for violating our electronic device policy in the classroom.” Teachers also can allow students to use electronic devices in the classroom for instructional …

D86 Digest: Now that No Child Left Behind Is Being Left Behind, What’s Next?

Administrators outline switch to an individual growth model for measuring student achievement that includes an emphasis on student well being.

The U.S. Senate this week is considering a bipartisan overhaul of the federal No Child Left Behind Act that would end the increasingly unrealistic requirement that all students in all public school districts in the country meet or exceed state standards in certain academic areas. While some of the details in the new legislation remain unresolved, Hinsdale Township High School District 86 officials believe it will move toward an individual growth model for measuring student achievement, something they said during Monday’s school board meeting they have been working on for some time. “We look at student growth, as opposed to the snapshot the state looks at, where they compare one class to the next,” Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Wahl said. “…

School board plans to explore funding options for project that would also include electrical infrastructure upgrades at both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South.

The Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Board of Education Monday night continued the process of exploring options for air conditioning all classrooms at both its campuses. Board members were told the project would cost $13.2 million, which would include upgrades to the electrical infrastructure at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South. Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Wahl said the project was consistent with the district’s Master Facilities Plan. “This lasers in on what was deemed a high priority item by the Master Facilities Planning Committee,” Wahl said. He said about half the instructional space at both campuses currently is air conditioned. Rick Wise of Gilbane, Inc. told board members that the project would affect about 60 …

Even without its usual lineup, the Hinsdale South girls tennis team still was pretty strong Saturday. The Hornets won four of the seven flights at the West Suburban Conference Gold Meet in Darien and earned a share of their second consecutive overall Gold title. Hinsdale South and Downers Grove South each scored 75 points to share the overall title, which combines points achieved in Gold duals and the conference meet. It’s the first time the Hornets have captured back-to-back overall Gold titles since their four-peat from 2002-06. Hinsdale South junior Emma Adcock (No. 1 singles), senior Kim Warpecha and junior Andrea Wakim (No. 1 doubles), senior Lindy Wing (No. 2 singles) and junior Steffi Chew and sophomore Paola Bozhilova (No. 2 …
