Hinsdale Central Students Named Illinois State Scholars

Prestigious award given to students who rank in top 10 percent of state high school students

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 has announced that 363 district students -- 284 from Hinsdale Central and 79 from Hinsdale South -- have been named 2013-14 Illinois State Scholars. The award is given annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission and recognizes high school students who rank in the top 10 percent of scholars across the state. Award criteria include scores on standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, and Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE), as well as class rank. The Hangover, Sherlock Holmes and Hinsdale South Hall-of-Famers

The 2012 Hinsdale South Hall of Fame inductees are both tied to show business: Grant Stuart works on promos for major movies, and Matthew Walsh is a Hollywood funnyman in The Hangover, Old School and more.

Editor's note: The following information was provided by Hinsdale South in a news release. From Hornets to Hollywood, this year's Hinsdale South High School Hall of Fame inductees are all about show business.  The 2012-13 inductees are Grant Stuart ('86) and Matt Walsh ('82), and they'll be honored at the induction ceremony Thursday, Nov. 15. He graduated from Hinsdale South High School in 1982. After graduating from Northern Illinois University with a degree in psychology, Walsh studied improv acting at the Annoyance Theater, Second City, Improv Olympic and Players Workshop. Walsh began performing stand-up comedy in 1991 as a co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade, which ran for three seasons on Comedy Central. Following this success…

Hope College Signs Hinsdale South Basketball Star

Brock Benson has accepted a presidential scholarship to attend Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

The following was submitted by Hinsdale South basketball coach Vince Doran: Brock Benson has accepted a presidential scholarship to attend Hope College in Holland, Michigan.  The 6’8 Hinsdale South Senior averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Hornets.  He will major in Engineering and continue his basketball career for the Flying Dutchmen.  Hope is a perennial division three power in men’s basketball.  For more on Benson, read Patch's profile of the Hinsdale South senior.

Hinsdale South Varsity Danceline Wins 2 State Championships

The team competed March 17 at the Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA) finals held at University of Illinois, Champaign.

The following was submitted by Nancy Ardovitch:  The 2011-12 Varsity Danceline at Hinsdale South won two state championships on March 17, 2012 at the Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA) finals held at University of Illinois, Champaign. They competed in 3A Kick and 3A Pom. The team is coached by Coartney Gillette and assisted by Heather Riggs. The team began practicing in July 2011, performs at football and basketball games and entered 4 competitions to qualify for both Team Dance Illinois(TDI) State and IDTA State finals. The team also qualified and competed at TDI State finals which were held in Peoria on March 4th; Hinsdale South placed 3rd in the 3A Pom division.

Retiring Jackson Reflects on 33-Year Coaching Run at Hinsdale South

Hinsdale South's Dave Jackson is coming to the end of his coaching and teaching career after being the boys cross country head coach and an assistant boys track coach for 33 seasons and a physical education and aquatics teacher at the high school.

In 2008, Max Rodrigues climaxed his senior year by competing with his Hinsdale South boys cross country teammates for the first time at the Class 3A state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park. Rodrigues was in contention for individual all-state honors with a top-25 honors as he entered the long final homestretch of the 3.0-mile race. With enthusiastic fans crowding and screaming along both sides, Hinsdale South boys cross country coach Dave Jackson suddenly emerged. “I remember Coach Jackson in my face yelling, ‘Kick it in,’ with 400 meters to go,” said Rodrigues, who now competes for DePaul University. “That image stays in my head today. George Brothers Shoot to Win at State Hoops Showdown

Phil and Joe George will both compete Thursday in the state Three-Point Showdown in Peoria.

Good aim runs in the family for Joe and Phil George. The brothers and varsity Hinsdale South High School basketball players both qualified to compete Thursday in the Class 4A Three-Point Showdown at the state basketball tournament. “It is an extremely unique situation that both of them qualified to participate downstate,” said Hinsdale South Varsity Basketball Coach Vince Doran. The brothers will compete among 32 players to see who can make the most baskets in 45 seconds. Four players from the first round will qualify for the finals on Friday. Board Members Want Bond Issue on Ballot  Two board members filed a petition with the superintendent’s office Monday to put a proposition on the Nov. 6 general election ballot regarding the district’s desire to borrow nearly $18 million for infrastructure updates.  Dianne Barrett and Richard Skoda argued that the district would overreach its authority by selling limited tax working cash fund bonds without posing the issue to voters.  The money would be used to complete electric infrastructure updates in both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South, including installing air conditioning in all classrooms.  “Given the current size of the working cash fund and the fact that the district is without a demonstrable need, the district in my opinion …

Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club Skater Heads to 2012 Youth Olympics

Hinsdale South High School sophomore to compete in short track speed skating in Austria.

Sarah Warren, a member of the Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club, will represent the United States at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. Warren, a 15-year-old skater from from Willobrook, will compete in short track speed skating. The games will be held Jan. 13-22. She is a sophomore at Hinsdale South High School. Warren won the spot on Team USA to represent her country in Short Track by being the top female qualifier at the American Cup meet in Cleveland earlier this year. Warren began speed skating with the Glen Ellyn Club six years ago after getting her start on ice playing hockey. She also competes in long track speed skating, high school track, and club soccer. Hard Work is Academic for Hornets' Benson

Hinsdale South center excels on the court and in the classroom.

The media is filled with stories of the high school basketball star who is a student of the game and little else. Hinsdale South senior Brock Benson is a student in the true sense of the word. Not only does the 6-8 center tower over most other players on the court, his accomplishments off the court actually trump his athletic talents. With a 5.23 GPA (on a 5.0 scale) and numerous prestigious extracurricular activities on his docket, Benson is being recruited by Ivy League schools such as Dartmouth. A close, physical contest that goes down to the wire. That’s what you can expect when Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South meet on the basketball court. And it was the case again Saturday night as host Hinsdale South eked out a 39-36 victory in Darien. The win was the third straight for the Hornets (6-1, 3-0), who remained tied for first in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with Proviso East. “It’s always a battle,” said Hinsdale South coach Jen Belmonte, who once played in several of the rivalry games for the Hornets. “I think it’s just the most heated rivalry ever.
