5 Students Get Hinsdale Rotary Club's Youth Merit Award

The honorees go Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale Middle School and Clarendon Hills Middle School.

The following is a release from the Rotary Club of Hinsdale: Five students who attend Hinsdale Central High School, Hinsdale Middle School and Clarendon Hills Middle School received the Rotary Club of Hinsdale’s Youth Merit Award Friday, January 11, 2013.  This award recognizes extraordinary high school and middle school students for services to their community and classmates, leadership qualities and academic achievements. Hinsdale Middle School Graduates 274 Eighth Graders ...

The graduation ceremony took place in the school's gym on June 6.

The following is a release from District 181: Hinsdale Middle School graduated 274 eighth graders on Wednesday, June 6, during a 3 p.m. ceremony in the school gym. The program included speeches delivered by graduating eighth graders Matthew Medick, Katherine Senese and Gabriella Seo. The program also contained a performance by the Eighth Grade Graduation Chorus, directed by Steve Tabisz and Jan Clarin. American Legion representative George Herrmann presented the Good Citizenship Award to Clare Caruso and Arman Haveric. Two students who attend Hinsdale Middle School received the Rotary Club of Hinsdale’s Youth Merit Award Friday, May 25, 2012. This award recognizes high school and middle school students for scholarship, leadership and service. The Rotary Club of Hinsdale honors students from area public and private schools at award ceremonies several times each school year. Lecture Teaches HMS Students About Life in Afghanistan

Hinsdale resident Tom Casten and Global Partnership for Afghanistan co-founder Dr. Ishaq Nadiri spoke at Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale middle schools this week.

Hinsdale Middle School (HMS) students, along with their parents, teachers, and other Hinsdale residents, gathered at the school on Tuesday night for a lecture that would teach them about Afghanistan and the challenges its citizens have faced over the past several decades. The lecture by Dr. Ishaq Nadiri, along with Hinsdale resident Tom Casten, was an effort by HMS staff to expose students and their families to other parts of the world. Nadiri is a native of Afghanistan who came to the U.S. when he was 19 years old. He is currently the Jay Gould Professor of Economics at New York University, and also serves as senior economic advisor to Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Former Blackhawk Brent Sopel Joins Forces With Hinsdale schools and Whole Foods Market to Help Needy Families

More than 100 families received gifts and Christmas dinner at Hinsdale's Memorial Hall Wednesday.

Former Blackhawks Defenseman Brent Sopel and his family joined forces with volunteers from Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale Middle School to help needy families in the area on Wednesday. The Sopel family approached HCS Family Services in Hinsdale to ask what they could do to help people who were struggling this holiday season. HCS Family Services told them about the many families that could not afford to buy food for Christmas dinner. The Sopels made a donation that was enough to pay for 200 turkeys from Whole Foods Market in Hinsdale. Brent Sopel had even planned to fly in to help hand out turkeys at Wednesday's giveaway, but had to cancel his plans at the last minute. The turkeys were donated as part of a larger event to provide 100 …

District To Vote On Debated Religious Holiday Policy in January

Added time will allow the public to weigh in on the topic and the district's legal counsel to review changes to the policy language.

UPDATED: Nov. 23 at 12:55 p.m. District 181 will postpone discussion until late January of changes to its policy governing the scheduling of events around religious holidays. At Monday night's meeting at Hinsdale Middle School, the District 181 School Board discussed adding language to the current policy to consider the number of students affected by a scheduled event that conflicts with a religious holiday. The board discussed a possible change that would state that the expected attendance at an event would be substantially lower, due to the conflict with a religious holiday, in order for the district to consider not participating. Hinsdale Police Investigate Thefts at Hinsdale Middle School

Between $400 and $500 has been stolen from Hinsdale Middle School's parent-teacher organization.

Hinsdale police are investigating several thefts that occurred at Hinsdale Middle School recently. "On several occasions in the past month, cash was allegedly taken from the Hinsdale Middle School staff mailroom and from a cash box belonging to the Parent-Teacher Organization-sponsored store," said Rita DuChateau, director of communications for Community Consolidated School District 181. "The money was the property of the PTO and is estimated to be between $400 and $500." "We had three separate incidents where there was $50 taken from teacher or faculty mailboxes. There's three separate envelopes containing U.S. currency of $50 each. It's unknown what it was for," said Hinsdale Deputy Police Chief Mark Wodka. "[The thefts] had occurred …
