Sound Off: Patch Readers Speak Out on Sen. Kirk Same-Sex Marriage Statement

Our Facebook readers had plenty of their own opinions on Kirk's Tuesday announcement.

Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk surprised many in announcing his support of same-sex civil marriage Tuesday. Kirk is just the second Republican Senator to buck his party with his stance. In a statement on his website Kirk said, “When I climbed the Capitol steps in January, I promised myself that I would return to the Senate with an open mind and greater respect for others. Same-sex couples should have the right to civil marriage. Our time on this Earth is limited, I know that better than most.  Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back-- government has no place in the middle.” Patch Facebook readers from across our network had plenty to say Tuesday. Here’s a sampling of their opinions: David E. It's Jedi like. Good move senator and a …

Cardinal George Says Same-Sex Marriage Is 'Against The Common Good', Do You Agree?

Cardinal Francis George releases a strongly worded letter as the State Legislature moves closer to a vote on gay marriage.

As gay marriage moves closer to a vote in the Illinois General Assembly, Cardinal Francis George has released a letter attacking the notion of same- sex marriage itself and urging Catholics to voice their objections.  UPDATED: Illinois State Senate members went home on Thursday without voting the bill up or down in the final days of the veto session, although a senate committee did vote in favor of the bill to allow same-sex marraige. Supporters are hoping the bill will be passed after new lawmakers are sworn in on Jan. 9, however, it may be weeks before the bill goes before the state senate for a full vote. The marriage equality bill's failure to go before the senate for a full vote on Thursday was credited to pushback from the Catholic …

UPDATE: Civil Unions Pass Illinois Senate, House

Illinois Statehouse News' Mary Massingale reports on civil union legislation passing the House, while medical marijuana came up short on votes (but could be back) and death penalty is on hold.

UPDATE: The Illinois State Senate passed a bill intended to make civil unions legal in the state. The bill now is in the hands of Gov. Pat Quinn, who had previously said he would sign the bill into law. The bill passed with a vote of 32 in favor and 24 against.  SPRINGFIELD — Civil unions gained a strong foothold in Illinois on Tuesday, as House lawmakers narrowly approved the measure granting spousal legal rights to same-sex couples. The measure was one of a trifecta of so-called liberal social issues that resonated throughout the House during the day, as a proposal to legalize marijuana for medical purposes was defeated before it was pulled for later consideration, and an initiative to abolish the death penalty narrowly passed a …

Illinois Senate Approves Civil Unions Bill

Gov. Quinn is expected to sign the bill into law shortly.

The Illinois Senate approved a bill Wednesday that recognizes civil unions between same-sex couples. The measure passed by a vote of 32 to 24. Senate Bill 1716 gives same-sex couples who enter into a civil union in Illinois the same legal rights as married heterosexual couples. Illinois will also recognize civil unions that took place in other states. The bill now moves to Gov. Pat Quinn, who is expected to sign it into law shortly. During his campaign this fall, Quinn said he supports equal marriage rights for all couples, both same-sex and heterosexual. State Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno, (R-Lemont), whose district includes Darien, voted against the bill.
