Flood Assessors Working in DuPage Starting This Week

Governor Pat Quinn has been touring affected counties and said that the results of the assessments will be used to request federal aid.

Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and local governing bodies began assessing flood damage in DuPage County (as well as in Cook and Lake counties) this week, according to a press release from the Illinois Government News Network.  The assessments are critical to attempts to secure federal government aid for counties affected by the mid-April floods, including grants and low-interest loans for individuals, and such loans for businesses, affected by the rising waters. Next week, assessors will begin discussions with local governments as well, which are eligible for up to 75 percent aid for flood-related expenses. “These …

Photo Gallery: DuPage County Underwater in Spring Flood

How crazy is it out there right now? Please show us! Upload your pictures of flooding from DuPage County towns here.

Note: when uploading photos/video, please include a caption with the town and street where they were taken. Thank you! By 7 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service in Romeoville had the total rainfall amount at 3.24 inches for the previous 24 hours. Then it rained some more. And it's not forecast to stop until Friday morning.  What does the scene look like for you? Are there several feet of water outside your home (or, heaven forbid, inside it)? Stranded cars; flooded lawns and streets? If you’re lucky enough not to be too busy dealing with any emergencies right now (and we hope you are), we’d love to see what you see, and our readership likely would as well.  If you have any great snapshots/photographs of the flooding around DuPage …

The governor signed 87 orders of pardon and expungement on Friday, freeing and/or granting clemency to six persons convicted in DuPage courts.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn handled 222 clemency petitions on Friday that go back to 2005, granting 87 and denying 135, in the process clearing six persons convicted in DuPage courts as long ago as 1988. According to the Peoria Journal-Star, Quinn’s office says he is committed to working through a backlog of over 2,500 cases accumulated during the tenure of the now-jailed ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich; he has granted 929 and denied 1,530 since taking office, his staff told the paper.  The pardons for convictions in DuPage County went to: One of the most significant pardons, the Journal-Star reported, was of Peggy Jo Jackson, 57, who was convicted of murdering her husband in 1986 despite attorneys saying that she suffered horrible domestic abuse from…

And, my friends, keep an eye out for the people who were excused. If their names ever do show up in a "beef" again, someway, somehow get these people back in jail for, at least, 25 yrs. to life. If they can be forgiven for their previous "bad behavior", they should be made to "toe the line" in the future. One step wrong and it's back inside they go and they don't get out for a very long time. …   more ›

Viewfinder: Hinsdale Children Learn to Earn

Children learn that it pays to be fiscally responsible.

Yesterday’s story described Hinsdale resident Tracy Frizzell’s initiative called DuPage Money Smart Week 2011 and the Hinsdale Public Library’s role. Now you can see more of what the 33 children experienced during the April 9 “Piggy Bank Pageant: Money Smart Story & Craft.” “The Piggy Bank Pageant gives young children the opportunity to learn about money and saving in a manner that is fun and age appropriate,” Frizzell said. “Activities like this can help give our kids a head start on their financial future.” Instructor Peggy Montroy and her two seventh grade volunteers, Elena Frizzell and Brigid Mulligan, taught the children a few new words, read a couple of stories and helped passed out snacks while piggybanks were being decorated. Tracy…

An Attempted Murder, a Man Who Punched a Nurse and a Challenge to a Red-Light Ticket All on Tap in the Area

Here's a look at some of the cases we're keeping an eye on this week.

Among the court cases we're keeping any eye on in DuPage county, is the case of a  man accused of trying to kill a former St. Charles woman (a Kane County case that crosses borders into DuPage), a mortgage-fraud case in Darien, a man charged with punching a nurse at Hinsdale hospital and a Naperville man who is challenging the process of a red-light ticket. KANE COUNTY   St. Charles—Attempted murder suspect Mario Bocanegra was supposed to go on trial in DuPage in December on a domestic violence charge where the victim is the same woman he is accused of trying to kill in St. Charles. The trial was first delayed because prosecutors couldn't locate the woman to testify, in part, because she moved out of house in St. Charles where she was …

New county chairman is confident his picks will serve the people well.

The Dan Cronin era of DuPage County government kicked off today with the appointment of a new state's attorney and new members to the DuPage County Water Commission. Cronin, who was elected DuPage County Board chairman in November, began his tenure with the board unanimously supporting his selections. Immediately following the confirmation of his appointment as state's attorney, Robert Berlin was sworn in as the top law enforcement official in DuPage. Berlin, who has worked as a prosecuting attorney since 1987, said he is looking forward to the challenge of leading the office he's served the past six years. Hundreds Sleep Outside To Raise Thousands

HInsdale teens and their families participated in the 7th Annual Saturday Sleepout to benefit the homeless.

With temperatures dropping to the mid-30s, Hinsdale teens joined hundreds of people across DuPage County to spend Saturday night in tents and cardboard boxes. The effort was to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness. "We're so privileged we get to sleep in a warm house, and [the homeless] don't, and it shows you how hard it is for them, even though sometimes it doesn't seem like it," said 13-year-old Clarendon Hills resident Jessica Sinnes. The event that took place between 6 p.m. on Saturday night and 6 a.m. Sunday morning raised money for Bridge Communities, a Glen Ellyn-based non-profit organization that provides housing, mentoring and counseling to homeless families. About 1,500 people in 100 groups took part in the Sleepout …
