Health Department Confirms Third West Nile Death in DuPage County

The number of West Nile virus cases reported nationwide is at the highest level since 2003.

Officials confirmed Monday a third person has died in DuPage County as a result of contracting West Nile virus. The DuPage County Health Department reported 25 people have contracted the virus, with three of those cases resulting in deaths. The confirmed cases of West Nile virus have affected people ranging in age from their 20s to 70s, said David Hass, public information officer for the health department. DuPage County to Offer Free HIV Testing

The tests will be given Oct. 14 to bring attention to National Latino AIDS Awareness Day.

The  DuPage County Health Department encourages individuals to know their HIV status and get tested. To make that possible, the health department is offering free HIV testing on Friday, Oct. 14, to bring attention to National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. The free HIV testing will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Health Department’s office at 245 W. Roosevelt Rd., Building 14, in West Chicago. Spanish speaking HIV counselors will be present to answer questions and conduct the testing. Early knowledge of HIV status provides access to life-extending treatment options, according to the county. Locally, individuals may be tested for HIV through a number of options including doctors’ offices, home-test kits and the health department’s …

First DuPage West Nile Death of 2011 Reported in Westmont

The DuPage Health Department reports a 70-year-old woman died of the virus.

A 70-year-old Westmont woman has died from West Nile Virus, the DuPage County Health Department confirmed Tuesday. This is the first death from West Nile reported in DuPage County this year and the second death in Illinois. A Cook County man in his 60s died from the virus earlier in September, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) said. The health department is not releasing any other information about the deaths. There have been 10 West Nile infections in Illinois this year, IDPH said. In addition to the cases in Cook and DuPage counties, people tested positive for West Nile in Winnebago, Coles, Marion and Franklin counties, IDPH said. Free Dental Checks for Kids Will Be Offered Aug. 3

The dental exams that are required before children can start school will be available during the Back to School Fair at the DuPage County Fairgrounds

School supplies? Check. New school clothes? Check School dental exam? Don't worry, the DuPage County Health Department has thought of that. The department will offer screenings at the annual Back to School Fair Aug. 3, sponsored by Catholic Charities at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton. The county health department will screen children under the age of 19. School dental exams are required for children in kindergarten and grades 2 and 6. The county also will conduct vision screenings. The fair will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Information will be available at the fair about other health department programs and services for low-income families. County Health Department Earns Perfect Score

For the second time, a team of health officials give the DuPage County Health Department a 100 percent rating for its plans on how to handle a public health emergency.

Health officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have given the DuPage County Health Department the highest rating, 100 percent, for its public health emergency plans. The Health Department is the local coordinating agency for the countywide Strategic National Stockpile, which would deliver medications to nearly 1 million DuPage County residents in the event of a public health emergency. This is the second time that the Health Department achieved a 100 percent rating in all 12 of the functional areas that were reviewed by officials. Few things sound better on a steamy day than a nice cool dip in a pool. But a fun day in the water can quickly turn scary if you’re not paying attention. It seems obvious, but the DuPage Health Department’s most basic tip for safe swimming is also the most important: Keep a close eye on your kids when they’re in the water.
