Hinsdale Considering Installation of Posts to Protect Businesses from Cars

The village wants to curb the curb-jumping parking mishaps that led to three car crashes into storefronts, all in the 100 block of South Washington Street.

The Village of Hinsdale is considering the purchase of 22 bollards—sturdy post-like barriers—to be installed in front of businesses in the Hinsdale downtown to protect them from cars, the Chicago Tribune reports. According to the paper, the topic has come under consideration after three incidents in March where drivers accidentally hit the accelerator pedal instead of the brake while parking and crashed into storefronts on the 100 block of S. Washington Street—the Steinway Piano Gallery twice, and a neighboring building once. "In talking with the village engineer, he feels very confident that this would address the issue," Hinsdale Police Department Chief Brad Bloom told the paper. "This isn't a foolproof situation… We know how important …

I'm adding some bollards at my store to prevent cars in the parking lot from hitting the building. Curbing won't prevent it. Our store is a 120+ year old (restored) building that houses an antique and collectables store. So we are putting 2 or three bollards together at different heights and painting them to look like dock posts and then draping some rope on them....I have seen other, creative …   more ›

English Garden Among Ideas for Vacant Downtown Properties

The Village of Clarendon Hills is looking into temporary uses for several empty sites in the central business district.

“It’s a win-win for everyone.” That’s what Clarendon Hills resident Mike Sutton said about his idea to turn the currently vacant Burlington Avenue property that once contained the Clarendon Hills Police Department into a public garden that Sutton says would bring the community together for a good cause. Sutton, who said he drew inspiration from the ideas of writer James Howard Kunstler and the paintings of Claude Monet, discussed with the Village Board at its March 19 meeting his proposal to create an English garden at the location that would feature donations from Clarendon Hills businesses and be maintained by residents, including kids and retired people. All of the items in the garden—plants, benches, gazebos—would be auctioned off and …

What happens with a produce garden in the cold months of the years? (I know we didn't really have those this year, so maybe it won't be a problem.) Would the produce garden look like a dirt plot during the winter? That's something I'm sure the village would have in mind.   more ›

Public Hearing on proposed Special Service Area Is Tonight

Clarendon Hills Village Board is holding a public hearing on the creation of a new Special Service Area for snow removal downtown.

The Clarendon Hills Village Board will hold a public hearing to discuss a proposed Special Service Area (SSA) to cover the costs of snow removal in the village's central business district. If the ordinance is not approved, business owners will have to pay for their own snow removal downtown this year. The village has provided sidewalk snow removal services downtown out of its general fund since 2000.  This service has proven to be expensive, however—costing the village up to $45,000 a year.  Despite reducing the scope of snow removal services for the business district last winter, the village still spent $29,000. "We are seeking to create an SSA so that we don't have sidewalk snow removal competing with core services within the general …
