Football: Hinsdale Central Defense Comes Up Big in Win at Downers North

For the second straight week, a Red Devils opponent went for a game-winning two point conversion late, but Friday the Hinsdale Central defense stepped up.

One week after Oak Park River Forest beat Hinsdale Central on a gutsy two-point conversion call in overtime, Downers Grove North went for two and the win late in the fourth quarter Friday but was turned away by the Red Devils defense in a 21-20 Hinsdale Central win, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. After Downers North’s Brandon Salter ran back an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown with 42 seconds in the fourth quarter, the Trojans decided to go for two and the lead.  "On the decisive play, Hinsdale Central’s Brett Goss shed a blocker and led a host of tacklers who stopped Salter to cement the 21-20 victory in the 78th annual battle for the Old Oaken Bucket at Carstens Field in Downers Grove," the Sun-Times reports. Krohn nets the game-winner for Hinsdale Central

Red Devils upset Lincoln-Way East at Red Devil Cup for first victory.

It came later than expected, but the Hinsdale Central boys soccer team finally got its first victory of the season on Thursday. The host Red Devils upset Lincoln-Way East 2-1 on the final day of group play at the Red Devil Cup. They had struggled through a pair of one-goal losses and two scoreless ties in their first four games. “It’s a great feeling,” said Hinsdale Central junior midfielder Mike Krohn, who scored the game-winning goal early in the second half. “We’re all really happy about it. It took long enough.” Lincoln-Way East (2-1-1) had already clinched a place in Saturday’s tournament championship game against Morton by virtue of victories over Oswego East and Downers Grove South, while Hinsdale Central (1-2-2) had no chance of …

Hinsdale South Girls Upend Downers North at Winter Classic

Trojans start out strong, but the Hornets finish strong to prevail, 57-49.

The Hinsdale South girls team’s 57-49 triumph over host Downers Grove North Saturday—a game that was part of the six-game Winter Classic held all day Saturday—can best be described as a tale of two halves. Behind a combined 15 points from Katie Hunzinger and Amelia Echemann, Downers North dominated most of the first half. The Trojans, in fact, led 24-10 midway through the second quarter when Hunzinger, who led all scorers with 18 points, hit a three-pointer. But the pendulum swung the other way during the second half. Toni Romiti and Uzo Okoro—limited to just one free throw between them in the first half—combined for 23 of the Hornets’ 39 second-half points as Hinsdale South went on to defeat the Trojans. The Hornets, who cut Downers North…

Lommatzch, Nehls Pin Their Way to Titles

Proviso West surprised Downers Grove North for wrestling team title at Hinsdale South, but Trojans had three individual champions.

Downers Grove North senior Zach Lommatzch has been the personification of perfection to start the wrestling season. At the Hinsdale South Invite on Saturday afternoon, the 189-pounder had four falls to run his season-opening pin streak to 10 matches. Lommatzch flattened Proviso West junior Shaquille Pittman in the second period for the title. But the Panthers would enjoy their moment as they stunned their West Suburban Silver rival Trojans with a 12-point victory, 225-213, for the team title. "I have been working hard in the practice room," Lommatzch said. "I have also been working hard in the off-season." There may be a sense of surprise concerning the slew of Lommatzch wins by pin, but Jimmy Nehls is the Trojans' known quantity. The …
