Patch Picks: Five Student-Athlete Standouts

Patch looks back at the big accomplishments of local student athletes this fall.

These five Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high school athletes each made an impression this fall. Here's a look back at their highlights: 1. Kim Warpecha, Hinsdale South tennis Warpecha, a senior, has played tennis for 10 years—if you don't count her sitting out the 2009 season after back surgery. Despite the setback, Warpecha, who was a two-time state qualifier going into her senior season, managed to help propel her team to a first-place tie with Downers Grove South this past week for the Hornets' second consecutive West Suburban Conference Gold title. Warpecha and partner Andrea Wakim won No. 1 doubles in the championship match against Downers Grove South's Amy Evan and Tiffany Bui. Coach Dana Graczyk has nothing but praise for…

District To Vote On Debated Religious Holiday Policy in January

Added time will allow the public to weigh in on the topic and the district's legal counsel to review changes to the policy language.

UPDATED: Nov. 23 at 12:55 p.m. District 181 will postpone discussion until late January of changes to its policy governing the scheduling of events around religious holidays. At Monday night's meeting at Hinsdale Middle School, the District 181 School Board discussed adding language to the current policy to consider the number of students affected by a scheduled event that conflicts with a religious holiday. The board discussed a possible change that would state that the expected attendance at an event would be substantially lower, due to the conflict with a religious holiday, in order for the district to consider not participating. The board is also considering adding language that the district would "make best efforts to avoid conflicts…

Rosh Hashana Issue Kept 130 Kids from Cross Country Meet, Parent Questions Decision

Parents attended a District 181 school board meeting to find out why the decision was made in September without notifying them first.

A District 181 parent is questioning the board's decision to prevent dozens of students from running in a cross country invitational in September. About two months ago, Hinsdale Central High School invited 11 middle schools, two from District 181, to compete in a cross country meet. The event was originally scheduled to happen on Sept. 9, the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana. Because the district has a policy that requires school officials to avoid scheduling events on days and times that would "create a foreseeable religious conflict for District 181 families, organizers rescheduled the competition for Sept. 8, with plans for the race to be over by 5:30 p.m. This would allow Jewish athletes to be home by sunset, before the holiday began. …

It would not have been necessary to REschedule, had it not been scheduled on Rosh Hashana in the first place. It is not a matter of being "offended"; it's a matter of fairness and respect. You will want that if, someday, you find that your religion is not practiced by the majority. I'd like to express my appreciation to everyone involved in examining this issue, regardless of their stance.   more ›

Hardies Edged Out for Cross Country State Championship

Hinsdale Central sophomore Jill Hardies' bid for the individual Class 3A cross country state title was denied by Oswego East junior Ariel Michalek Saturday in Peoria. Red Devils falter in team race.

Jill Hardies made the most of her truncated cross country season. The Hinsdale Central sophomore, who missed virtually the entire regular season with a stress fracture in her left foot, nearly stole the individual show at the Class 3A state finals at Detweiller Park on Saturday. Ensnared in a thrilling four-way test of wills and endurance with Oswego East junior Ariel Michalek, Geneva senior Kelly Whitley and Palatine senior Courtney Brown, Hardies had her bid for an individual state title evaporate in the closing meters when Michalek escaped with a two-second triumph. "I didn't know what to expect," Hardies said of the 3-mile race to determine individual supremacy in the largest-school division. "We kind of all took the lead at different …

Central's Hardies Wins Regional Cross-Country Title

Red Devil boys and girls finished second; Hinsdale South boys and girls also qualify for sectionals.

Even a steady rain couldn't slow down Hinsdale Central sophomore cross-country star Jill Hardies on Saturday. Rain made the course at the Class 3A Lyons Regional a little slick, but Hardies stayed upright and won the individual championship in a time of 17:26, five seconds ahead of Downers Grove North's Gaby Effrein and Samantha Fry. "I was little worried that I would have to wear spikes, because they hurt my feet a lot, but thankfully the ground soaked all the water up so I could just wear my flats," said Hardies, who recently returned from a stress fracture in her foot. "I got nervous a couple times, but I just kept going. I was feeling really good again today." The effort by Hardies helped Hinsdale Central to second place in the team …
