Darien: The Dec. 17 hearing for Joseph Spitalli's arraignment in his murder case has been pushed back after a request for cameras in the courtroom was filed. Spitalli is charged in the November murder of a man dating Spitalli's ex-girlfriend. A motion has been filed seeking extended media coverage of Spitalli's arraignment. The judge set a Jan. 9 hearing on the media request, while scheduling the arraignment for Jan. 14, records show. Murder-for-Hire, Sexual Exploitation of Teens, Pipe Bomb Plot: Court Watch

Patch covers happenings in major court cases, including a former Wheaton man's charges of hiring a fellow inmate to kill two public officials and two others and a Naperville man's sexual exploitation trial.

Wheaton: A judge recently ruled that DuPage prosecutors used an improper tactic to bring a murder-for-hire suspect in for questioning. However, Judge George Bakalis decided the information obtained in the interview, and ultimately the charges filed against Gordon Vanderark, would have been no different if the tactic had not been used, records show. Vanderark is charged with trying to hire a fellow prison inmate to kill a DuPage County Judge and assistant state's attorney tied to a previous felony conviction that landed Vanderark in prison. Prosecutors used a confidential source to learn about Vanderark's plan and set up a "ruse" hearing on an unrelated issue to have Vanderark brought back from the Centralia Correctional Center.  Once in …

Murder Trial, Police Seek Carjacking Suspect, 7-Eleven Robbery: Court Watch

Patch reports updates in major court cases, including an evaluation for a man suspected of murder and the unknown whereabouts of a carjacking suspect.

Lisle: A second man charged in a July 7-Eleven robbery has pleaded guilty for his part in the incident, records show. Antonio Finley, 21, pleaded guilty to a robbery charge and was sentenced to six years in prison as part of a deal with prosecutors, who dropped several other counts against Finley. He was given credit for four months in DuPage County Jail and received a recommendation of a prison boot camp, which could shorten his prison time. In October, 17-year-old Steven Gayden was sentenced to four years in prison in connection to the robbery. He also was given a boot camp recommendation. Lisle: A grand jury has indicted a Lisle man on telephone harassment and aggravated battery charges stemming from an October incident involving a high school volleyball game. John Kasik is accused of leaving threatening messages for his daughter's volleyball coach at Lisle High School, and later bumping the school's athletic director during a meeting. Kasik is free on $300,000 bail with a scheduled court appearance - at which he will likely be arraigned - on Nov. 19. Wheaton: A Wheaton teen will undergo a sex offender evaluation as part of his case on charges he tried to arrange a meeting for sex with a young girl, court records show. Eric Pence was arrested in September after police investigated complaints from the girl's parents about Pence, who reportedly had lewd images of the girl on his phone. Prosecutors allege Pence wanted to meet the 12-year-old at the Wheaton Library for sexual activity. Pence has pleaded not guilty to child pornography, grooming and traveling to meet a minor charges. Man Pleads Guilty in Woodridge Meth Conspiracy Case: Court Watch

The following are recent developments in notable DuPage County court cases: Glen Ellyn—When former firefighter David Garmoe returns to court Nov. 16 in his theft case, it could be to finalize a plea. Courtrecords show Garmoe's attorney and prosecutors met with the judge to discuss plea negotiations during an Oct. 26 hearing. Garmoe, the former treasurer of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company, has pleaded not guilty to stealing $260,000 from the organization. If a deal, which would most likely involve restitution, cannot be reached, the case is expected to be scheduled for a trial date, records state. Hinsdale South Grad's Alleged Murderer Pleads Not Guilty: Court Watch

Willowbrook: A Willowbrook man charged in the shooting death of a Hinsdale South High School graduate has pleaded not guilty. Juan Cuellar denied a five-count murder indictment during an Oct. 22 hearing. He remains held without bond in DuPage County Jail. Prosecutors allege Cuellar drove up on 18-year-old Joshua Holmes as he walked near the Lake Hinsdale Terrace apartments and fired six times, hitting Holmes who later died. Cuellar is scheduled to return to court Nov. 27. Cuellar's mother, 42-year-old Elva Hernandez, also pleaded not guilty this week to obstruction of justice charges. She concealed the gun Cuellar used in the shooting, according to the indictment against her. Court records show Hernandez wanted her bail reduced to $30,000…

Wheaton: A 23-year-old Elgin woman faced felony theft and fraud charges after prosecutors accused her of stealing more than $500 from the DuPage County Employees Credit Union. Hermila Garcia, an employee at the financial institution, took the money in July after falsifying documents that said she transferred the money from her drawer to the vault. She was indicted last month of two counts each of theft, financial institution fraud and misappropriation of financial institution of property. She returns to court on Nov. 16. Prosecutors allege Nikolai Anderson, who also is charged with sexual exploitation of a child and indecent solicitation of a child, exposed himself to two girls, ages 12 and 14, and asked one of the girls to perform a sex act. Second Trial Date Set for Accused Darien Murderer Borizov: Court Watch

The following are recent developments in notable DuPage County court cases: Darien—Attorneys in Johnny Borizov's triple murder case have their eyes on a new trial date in the 2010 case - April 2013. During a hearing this week, Judge Daniel Guerin gave the case its second scheduled trial date after a planned January trial was bumped because of an attorney's conflict. Borizov is accused in the shooting deaths of three members of the Kramer family in March 2010 in a scheme that intended to kill Angela Kramer, the mother of Borizov's son. Jacob Nodarse, Borizov's codefendant, pleaded guilty, but mentally ill, a year ago to a single murder count in a deal with prosecutors to secure his testimony against Borizov.
