District 86's general contractor said the low number of subcontractors bidding on several summer-improvement packages is actually due to a construction market on the rise and a corresponding lack of desire by firms to take on small-scope projects.
The District 86 Board of Education approved the summer construction bids recommended by its general contractor last week despite two board members being unhappy with two one-bid packages and a request from a future board member to postpone the vote until the new board is seated. Board members voted 5-2 on April 22 to approve the selected subcontractors, who are expected to carry out about $1.1 million in construction work the board budgeted for this summer, including main hall renovations at both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South, a new girls locker room at South, and new exhaust fans at Central. Dianne Barrett and Richard Skoda casted the “no” votes. Both dissenters said receiving only one bid on two of the eight packages—electrical …

The District 86 projects will include main hallway renovations at both campuses and a renovated girls locker room at Hinsdale South.
The year after major construction work took place at both campuses, summer 2013 facilities work at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South is expected to cost District 86 about $1.7 million, according to an administration report discussed at Monday night’s board of education meeting. The cost of the summer’s planned designed construction projects, which include main hall renovations at both schools, an expanded and renovated girls locker room at South, and new exhaust fans in the Central gym, is estimated by District 86 officials to be about $1.1 million, not to exceed $1.6 million. The cost estimate for non-design construction work such asbestos removal, transformer repair, and sidewalk repair is $140,250, and design-only costs like those for…

Clarendon Hills public works director Michael Millette said at Monday's village board meeting that DuPage County is just about finished with the 55th Street construction project. "They're doing a little bit of general cleanup," Millette said, "but they're rapidly about to be done with the project." On Nov. 29, a new stoplight was activated in Clarendon Hills just outside Country House at 55th and Clarendon Hills Road. The street's regular drivers are likely still getting used to it, and we want to know what they think. Comparing the intersection pre-stoplight and …

The new traffic pattern will continue until mid-November.
There is some good and bad news for people who have been looking forward to the end of the Garfield Street resurfacing project. The good news is the northbound lane has been resurfaced and is now open. The bad news is the southbound lane is now closed, so traffic will still be down to one lane on Garfield Street until mid-November. To some, however, it's all bad news. Paula Goss, owner of Fuller's Home and Hardware, said, "Business has been anywhere from 10 to 15 percent slower because people can't drive north into town from 55th street and if you can't come north, how is anyone supposed to get around?" Hinsdale resident Ellie Toomey has other concerns. "I'm worried about the slick roads we'll have come October and November," she said. "…

More of the same. If the construction market is picking up after years of decline, these forms would be reaching for all they can get. A one bid result should result in re-bidding the project after analysis of why others did not respond. Could there be undue influence here?   more ›
