Christmas 2012 Gifts: What Are You Hoping to Get?

Yes, already — even before Black Friday. We know the Christmas shopping tends to get done earlier every year in Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills and everywhere else. So, here's your chance to tell your friends and family what Christmas gift you want in 2012.

Head to area stores and you'll see that it's already beginning to look a lot like Christmas 2012 in and around the village. All kinds of gift ideas are out there. For totally local, you can get to Tigers & Tulips, Stockholm Objects, or Zabler Jewelers to find a one-of-a-kind gift in the heart of Hinsdale or Clarendon Hills. Maybe the big box stores are your thing? Walmart has already announced it is offering layaway again this year, with the iPad and HP Ultrabook-based laptops on the list of eligible purchases. The store has changed the policy on its open fee, which is kept if you ultimately can't pay for the item or refunded as a Walmart gift card when the item is fully paid off. That fee — or credit — has been increased from $5 to $15. …

The business consulting firm, led by founder and longtime Hinsdale resident Wes Gibson, partnered with HCS and decided to dedicate $30,000 that would’ve otherwise gone to a black-tie company Christmas party to give struggling DuPage County families a holiday to remember.  It turns out…

Paulette Delcourt: Shopping Local vs. Shopping the Mall

Shopping local is easier, and the tax dollars stay in your community—my experiences this year have taught me as much!

Last week I realized I had about 90 minutes to shop for 24 people, including travel time.  On the way to the Oak Brook mall, I stopped in a local shop, Clever Girl, to make some pre-selected purchases. It's one of those stores where you can buy the stocking, and the stuffers in the same place. The owner knows me by name, as do all of the women who work there. Even though my dog has never  spent a red cent in the store, he is always welcome to browse as long as he promises not to chew the merchandise. For his self-control he is awarded an organic dog biscuit. As I lack his self-control I usually walk out biscuit-less and with a small haul of unique merchandise.   I have some fun memories of the day I met Matt Damon at that store (although …
