The DuPage County Health Department offers tips to ensure trees, decorations and lights look pretty and work safely.
Those holiday decorations are beautiful to look at with lights twinkling and tinsel sparkling. Taking steps to make sure the lights, decorations and trees are used properly will make the holidays safer. When decorating for the holidays its important to take safety measures to keep all the sparkle from going up in flames or causing family members injury, according to officials. The DuPage County Health Department offers a number of tips to keep your holidays merry and bright this holiday season. Head to area stores and you'll see that it's already beginning to look a lot like Christmas 2012 in and around the village. All kinds of gift ideas are out there. For totally local, you can get to Tigers & Tulips, Stockholm Objects, or Zabler Jewelers to find a one-of-a-kind gift in the heart of Hinsdale or Clarendon Hills. Maybe the big box stores are your thing? Walmart has already announced it is offering layaway again this year, with the iPad and HP Ultrabook-based laptops on the list of eligible purchases. The store has changed the policy on its open fee, which is kept if you ultimately can't pay for the item or refunded as a Walmart gift card when the item is fully paid off. That fee — or credit — has been increased from $5 to $15. …

Christmas came early for six HCS Family Services client families; two of the families live in Hinsdale.
More than a week after the pile of gifts arrived, Ellen Tucker was still shocked when she looked at the donations under the Christmas tree in her family’s Willowbrook home. “I’ll do anything for anybody,” said Tucker, a 43-year-old single mother of two and client of HCS Family Services in Hinsdale. “But I don’t expect anything back ever.” The Tuckers were one of six area families selected as recipients of a $5,000 Christmas from Gibson Consulting Group, LLC. The business consulting firm, led by founder and longtime Hinsdale resident Wes Gibson, partnered with HCS and decided to dedicate $30,000 that would’ve otherwise gone to a black-tie company Christmas party to give struggling DuPage County families a holiday to remember. Shopping local is easier, and the tax dollars stay in your community—my experiences this year have taught me as much!
Last week I realized I had about 90 minutes to shop for 24 people, including travel time. On the way to the Oak Brook mall, I stopped in a local shop, Clever Girl, to make some pre-selected purchases. It's one of those stores where you can buy the stocking, and the stuffers in the same place. The owner knows me by name, as do all of the women who work there. Even though my dog has never spent a red cent in the store, he is always welcome to browse as long as he promises not to chew the merchandise. For his self-control he is awarded an organic dog biscuit. As I lack his self-control I usually walk out biscuit-less and with a small haul of unique merchandise.
