A couple of weeks ago, we asked parents if they had any rules for their new teen drivers. Of course, before those teens can be drivers, they need something to drive! Two recent car burglaries at Hinsdale South are being investigated by Darien Police.
Sometime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on July 5, someone broke into a car that was parked in the Hinsdale South High School parking lot. The driver came back to find the drivers side window shattered. The burglar had stolen a purse which had cash and credit cards, gift cards, a wallet and a bluetooth earpiece. The estimated value of what was stolen was about $850. The victim told police that more than $1,000 was then charged to the stolen credit cards for purchases made in Willowbrook, Markham and Harvey. On July 6, sometime between 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., a car parked on the roadway near Hinsdale South had its drivers side window broken. Metra service was delayed for nearly an hour Thursday night, after a freight train collided with a car on the railroad tracks near the train stop in downtown Hinsdale. It happened around 5 p.m., and the driver was able to get out of the car before it was struck by the train. The Hinsdale Fire Department was called to the scene of the crash. "[The driver] saw the train coming , and got out of the automobile before the train struck the car," said Hinsdale Fire Capt. William O'Rourke. "It was a slow-moving coal train from the city heading west." Metra spokesperson Tom Miller said that although it was not a Metra train that was was involved in the collision, Metra service was affected. "Several of our trains were delayed up to 50 minutes," …

A car lost control on 59th Street around 6 p.m. in Westmont and plunged into a pond in front of the Twin Lake Towers Apartment complex. "There was a woman inside. We got her out, and she's all right," said Westmont Deputy Fire Chief Jim Connolly. "She's refusing medical treatment and will probably be heading home soon." Connolly said that this is the third time he can remember that a car has fallen into this particular pond. With the first snowfall of the season, police are urging motorists to slow down and use caution on the roads.

A Hinsdale man was hit by a car at the intersection of Malden and Ogden Avenues. The accident happened at about 6:44 p.m. on Oct. 29. William J. Lewis, 41, was brought to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries. His condition was not available at the time of this report. The other driver Martin Henehan, 44, of 406 Malden Ave. in La Grange Park was ticketed for failure to yield at an intersection. He told police he was southbound on Malden and started to turn left to go east on Ogden when he did not see the bicycle that was turning left from eastbound Ogden. Henehan told police he was wearing a reflective shirt and using the bicycle light.

Strong winds Tuesday morning trapped a car in a garage on Vine Street.
Strong winds caused a tree to crash through the roof of a garage on the 600 Block of Vine Street Tuesday morning. It happened around 8 a.m., trapping a car inside and sending a tree limb through the home's carport. "I was sitting in the back having coffee. All of a sudden, I heard a noise, and it just blew right over," said Stan Sasak, owner of the home. "Firemen broke the window trying to get the car out...We can't get it out, because the doors are all jammed."
