Patch's 'Sunday Toons' Featured in Riverside Art Show

Artist Charley Krebs shows off his Patch work at Riverside Public Library.

For cartoonist Charley Krebs, drawing his thoughts has always been a form of shorthand journalism. "A good image will draw you in," Krebs said of his work. "It makes an editorial comment and can start a good discussion." Krebs has been drawing the news since 1979, first at his college newspaper and most recently here at Patch. Readers can see his Sunday Cartoon weekly on their local Patch site where Krebs offers his unique vision of the world and his opinion on events that matter to readers. While much may have changed in the cartooning business since he got his start, Krebs said he loves the ability to work with a digital news site. "Everything is instantaneous," he said. "I can come up with an idea, draw it and have it up on the site the…

Thank you, Wanda. Volatile and political Morton College of the mid-1970s prepared me well for any issues addressed in the Life or now on Patch. It's always nice to hear from someone besides my mother who remembers my work from those days!   more ›

Hornet Jazz Festival Showcases Musicians, Artists and Good Jazz

Featuring artwork and jazz ensembles from Cass Junior High, Burr Ridge Middle School, Eisenhower Junior High, Gower Middle School and Hinsdale South High School, the 26th annual Hornet Jazz Festival was a huge hit.

The Hinsdale South High School auditorium hummed with the smooth sounds of jazz on Thursday night, as parents, friends and community members cheered on musicians from Cass Junior High, Burr Ridge Middle School, Eisenhower Junior High, Gower Middle School and Hinsdale South High School at the 26th annual Hornet Jazz Festival. The Hornet Big Bands capped off the night, with Big Band 1 staying on to perform an encore at the request of the crowd. Most of the songs featured numerous soloists, which the band directors noted …

Hinsdale Central Teacher Is Art Educator of the Year

Hinsdale Central art teacher Laura Milas received the Art Educator of the Year Award from the Illinois Art Educators Association Friday afternoon.

A Hinsdale Central art teacher received the Illinois Art Educators Association's Educator of the Year Award Friday afternoon. The award ceremony took place at the Hilton in Lisle. Laura Milas, chair of the Hinsdale Central Art Department said the honor took her by surprise. Earlier this year, she had been nominated by a member of the organization for Secondary Educator of the Year, so when she got a call from the IAEA, Milas says, "I thought they were calling to tell me I had lost!" Instead, she learned she had won the highest honor the organization bestows annually. "It floored me," she says.  Milas appreciates the fact that her award was given to her by her peers, especially because she got to show the IAEA committee a portfolio of her …

A Tale of Two Artists: Retired Hinsdale Plastic Surgeon and Mother of Six Love to Paint

Students from the Hinsdale Center for the Arts showcase their work.

What does a plastic surgeon do after he retires? He takes up painting. How does a mother of six with one grandchild find time for herself? She takes art classes. Meet Deming Payne and Stephanie Battaglia. Payne was a plastic surgeon for 30 years in Hinsdale. After 30 years transforming bodies, he now spends his time transforming 140-pound, cold-press paper. Stephanie Battaglia is a Hinsdale resident who always had an interest in creating art, but not necessarily the time to pursue it. The Hinsdale Center for the Arts gave both aspiring artists an opportunity to pursue a creative hobby and the tools to improve their skills. The HCA is featuring their work in an exhibit called, "The Center of Our Imagination" which includes the oil, acrylic…
