Empty School Bus Involved in I-294 Accident

The Oak Brook Fire Department confirmed the accident near the intersection of I-294 and I-88, and crews have cleared the scene.

Updated at 3:32 p.m. The site of an accident on I-294 involving a school bus carrying no children is now clear, according to firefighter paramedic Dave Kornfeind of the Oak Brook Fire Department. Fire officials said the driver of the empty school bus lost control of the bus near on northbound I-294 near I-88 Tuesday afternoon just after 2 p.m. The bus was the only vehicle involved. The driver was transported to Elmhurst Memorial with minor injuries and the bus suffered only minor damage. The cause of the crash is unknown. Two lanes were closed for a period of time as the crash was cleared, Kornfield said. HMS Student Hit by Car at Intersection of 1st and Garfield

Injuries were "relatively minor," according to Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom, but the 11-year-old was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital.

An 11-year-old Hinsdale Middle School student was hit by a car while crossing Garfield Street on 1st Street around 3 p.m. Thursday, Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said. The female student was in the north crosswalk when a car that was turning left onto southbound Garfield from westbound 1st hit the student, according to Bloom, causing "relatively minor" injuries to the student.  "The driver said they didn’t see the pedestrian due to the sun being in their eyes," Bloom said.  The driver, 41-year-old Teresa Urquhart of Willowbrook, was cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian and the victim, who was walking in a group of at least three at the time, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released…

Teen Pedestrian Hit by Car, Prompting Hinsdale Traffic Study

The incident occurred at 1st and Garfield in December; study results aren't expected until late February.

The Hinsdale Police Department is in the midst of performing a traffic study at the intersection of 1st and Garfield streets on the east side of downtown after a 15-year-old was hit by a car while crossing Garfield on Dec. 21, Hinsdale Police Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said. The victim, a Hinsdale resident, was hit while crossing in the north crosswalk at 1:45 p.m. that Wednesday by a northbound driver who was passing a different vehicle stopped in the road. The 15-year-old was transported to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital with injuries that were not known by Wodka. “[The driver] was unable to see the pedestrian due to the vehicle that was stopped,” Wodka said. This intersection has been a menace for years with many incidents and near misses. If Hinsdale Hospital can have a flashing pedestrian crossing, mandating drivers stop, why can't we have one at First and Garfield? As for people ultimately being responsible- why have any crossings anywhere? What a cop out!   more ›

At least once a year, the entire department runs through scenarios to sharpen their rescue skills, and we got it on tape.

Hinsdale firefighters spent the better part of Thursday using the jaws of life. At least once a year, the department uses its rescue tools to run drills on cars donated by Charity Towing.

Hinsdale Man Falls From Moving Car, Traffic Interrupted After Domestic Dispute Leads to Accident

The accident took place Thursday in the area of 57th and Washington Streets.

Traffic around 57th Street and Washington was affected temporarily around noon on Thursday after an accident in the area. Hinsdale Police say they arrived on the scene to help with an ambulance call for someone who was bleeding from the head. The Hinsdale Fire Department was treating a 26-year-old Hinsdale man that was suffering from head injuries. He was later transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Hinsdale Police said the man was hurt when he fell from the hood of a moving vehicle  being driven by a 22-year-old male family member, who lives with him in the 5700 block of Astony Court. The 26-year-old allegedly clung to the hood of the moving vehicle after a domestic dispute that occurred at their home earlier that day. A…

Metra Service Delayed After Freight Train Hits Car on Hinsdale Railroad Tracks

The driver was able to get out of the car before the train hit it.

Metra service was delayed for nearly an hour Thursday night, after a freight train collided with a car on the railroad tracks near the train stop in downtown Hinsdale. It happened around 5 p.m., and the driver was able to get out of the car before it was struck by the train. The Hinsdale Fire Department was called to the scene of the crash. "[The driver] saw the train coming , and got out of the automobile before the train struck the car," said Hinsdale Fire Capt. William O'Rourke. "It was a slow-moving coal train from the city heading west." Metra spokesperson Tom Miller said that although it was not a Metra train that was was involved in the collision, Metra service was affected. "Several of our trains were delayed up to 50 minutes," …

Hinsdale Bicyclist Hit By Car

Police say the accident happened at the intersection of Malden and Ogden Avenues in La Grange.

A Hinsdale man was hit by a car at the intersection of Malden and Ogden Avenues. The accident happened at about 6:44 p.m. on Oct. 29. William J. Lewis, 41, was brought to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries. His condition was not available at the time of this report. The other driver Martin Henehan, 44, of 406 Malden Ave. in La Grange Park was ticketed for failure to yield at an intersection. He told police he was southbound on Malden and started to turn left to go east on Ogden when he did not see the bicycle that was turning left from eastbound Ogden. Henehan told police he was wearing a reflective shirt and using the bicycle light.
