Hinsdale South Pitcher Goes Distance in Win Over Central

A four-run third inning put the Hornets ahead, but they needed a strong finish to hold off the Red Devils.

The score: Hinsdale South 5, Hinsdale Central 4 The way it happened: Senior outfielder Matt Reschke keyed the Hinsdale South offense with a three-run triple in the third inning and senior Mike Rizzo pitched a complete game during the Hornets' home win Tuesday over the Red Devils. Central jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by junior Matt Muellner, but South rallied with a four-run third that saw Red Devils senior pitcher Basil Arain give up two singles, hit a batter, and walk in a run before Reschke's triple cleared the bases.  Rizzo gave up three runs in the fifth inning before retiring the Red Devils in order in both the sixth and seventh. The play: With one out and nobody in the top of the sixth inning, junior …

LT Baseball Tops Hinsdale Central on Walk-off Hit (Photos)

Only one run was scored through five innings, but LT came back from a 4-1 hole to win 5-4 on a walk-off hit by Sam Cybulski.

It was a pitchers' duel between rivals Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central through five innings Monday, but offensive attacks by both teams down the stretch led to an exciting 5-4 LT win. Lyons pitcher Alex Vannucci was impressive through five innings, allowing seven hits but striking out five Central batters, including Matt Muellner to escape a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning.  But the wheels came off in the sixth inning when Vannucci surrendered five straight hits, including three doubles and a triple, to put LT in a 4-1 hole.  The Lions tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. They loaded the bases with three straight singles, including a bunt by Tom Prescott that resulted in a miscommunication about where to throw. Jim …

UWGB Coach Wardle, Hinsdale Central Grad, Accused of Mistreating Player

According to a now-public complaint, the coach once forced a sick player to work out until he lost control of his bowels, then openly mocked him for it, as well as for his religion.

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay coach Brian Wardle, a graduate of Hinsdale Central High School, is facing an investigation after a former player filed a complaint accusing him of repeated mistreatment and abuse, the details of which went public on Monday, USA Today reports. According to the paper, 7'1" walk-on Ryan Bross claims that Coach Wardle regularly harangued him with homophobic and sexually derogatory language, mocked his religious commitment to chastity by telling him he’d play better if he had sex with a girl, and once ignored Bross’ professed physical illness, instead forcing the player to run hills until he lost control of his bowels into his shorts. “[Then] Wardle told me I was a piece of [expletive] and that he had never …

... "the gay revelation".... This has nothing to do with "the gay revelation" (cue the stage bombs and smoke machines and the dramatic music.) The timing has everything to do with the Maine West hazing thing where a bunch of straight guys stuck their fingers and sticks up the behinds of other straight players- exactly what straight jocks do at all the parties.   more ›

Hinsdale Central Tight End Ian Bunting Commits to Michigan

The 6-foot-6 junior chose Ann Arbor in part because of a recently deceased family member's hope that he would be a Wolverine.

Hinsdale Central tight end Ian Bunting has committed to play his college ball at the University of Michigan after he graduates next year, the Chicago Tribune reports.  The 6-foot-6, 215-pound Hinsdale resident had scholarship offers from big-program schools including Notre Dame and USC, according to SB Nation. Bunting told the Tribune that he chose Michigan in part because his recently-deceased grandmother was a Wolverine and was hoping he'd have the opportunity to play in Ann Arbor. See the full Chicago Tribune story here. "Has a nice, long frame with a lot of room to add weight," a Scouts.com scouting report of Bunting by Allen Trieu reads. "Good, reliable hands and shows ability to make grabs in traffic and along the sideline. Adjusts …

Would You Still Cheer for the Bears if Their Best Player Were Gay?

A current gay NFL player could come out in a few months and continue to play in the league, according to an online columnist. His biggest concern? Harm from homophobic fans. How would you react if he played for your favorite team?

In the same week the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case of California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage case, a CBS Sports online columnist says a current gay NFL player could come out publicly within the next few months.  This player would become the first athlete in one of America's major team sports to be openly gay and continue to play. READ: Check Out the Full CBSSports.com Column for More Details But the obstacle keeping this unidentified player from revealing his sexual orientation isn't the fear of how teammates or even opposing players will react, writes CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman, citing former and current NFL players as sources for this information. It's a worry of what fans might do, Freeman …

How about we lighten up on Jenny Mcarthy? She's a mother and has chosen Geneva to raise her son. Red Devils, Hornets Boys Basketball Remain Positive About Seasons

Hinsdale Central exited the playoffs with an upset loss, while Hinsdale South finished 7-19, but both teams stayed upbeat about their 2013 seasons.

Despite enduring some respective disappointments as their seasons drew to a close, both the Hinsdale Central Red Devils and the Hinsdale South Hornets boys basketball coaches struck an upbeat tone about their year, the Suburban Life reports. Hinsdale Central (18-7) were upset by 12-seed Geneva last Thursday, 55-49, and forced to leave the playoffs earlier than expected, but can fall back on a 12-win streak to start the calendar year and their first West Suburban Silver title since 2000, the paper said. "Our senior group was special," coach Nick Latorre said of the nine departing seniors. "I think the overall focus of our program is built on hard work, discipline and unselfishness, and I think those are the three things they have brought …
