The Hinsdale Police Department was founded in 1873, when the village was incorporated. Isaacc L. Hinds, a tin…More merchant and postmaster, was the first police magistrate.
The Hinsdale Police Department has 26 full-time sworn officers, 10 part-time non-sworn officers and four volunteers. The Chief of Police, Bradley Bloom, has been with the department since 1984.
In 2009, the department launched a volunteer program. Volunteers serve as lobby greeters, answer non-emergency calls and help with department projects. According to the department, the time these volunteers give to answering questions and listening to residents' concerns allows police officers to focus on their other duties.
The Hinsdale Police Department is part of the Felony Investigative Assistance Team (FIAT), a multi-jurisdictional taskforce comprised of officers from the Brookfield, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Lombard, Woodridge, Oak Brook and Westmont communities.
The FIAT task force includes a major crimes unit, a canine response unit and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, which has approximately 50 members. FIAT also handles accident reconstruction and planned events.
