Rick Johnson – I agree that Illinois has to be more competitive, it’s just a fact ofRead More life. But is there an end to how far we should stoop? It is not just Illinois, but even the business friendly states that are losing out to foreign competition. And while red states are whipsawing blue states, all our states are being adversely affected. In 2013 according to Walgreen’s annual report, they paid about $134 million in state taxes which was about 2.2% of their earnings. What that does not reflect is the $6 million tax credit over a 10 year period nor does it reflect $625,000 in state incentives to train employees. Souce: http://redecatur.com/walgreens-to-renounce-u-s-citizenship/. But, I thought that the Illinois corporate tax rate was between 7% to 9%. In the US we previously argued which was better between red & blue states, and perhaps Walgreens would consider moving to Texas since their stated tax rate is 0% (Not really accurate since they have other ways of taxing corporations) but cheaper none the less. The nominal tax rate for the US is 35%, but corporations with a tax accounting department never actually pay that amount, and in fact many profitable corporations actually net rebates rather that actually paying taxes. I should clarify that those corporations that actually accrue a tax liability will defer the majority of if and therefore the cash actually transferred to the federal/state government is delayed for years. That amounts to an interest free loan in my opinion. But, individuals do not get to defer their taxes indefinitely like corporations. According to Walgreens 2013 annual report, their pre-tax earnings were $3,895 million and they paid $1,122 million (28.8%) but when one considers their tax deferral of $816 million their effective tax rate in 2013 was actually 7.9% As I understand, Switzerland’s nominal tax rate is 17%. I do not know if their effective tax rate is less than that. But I have to ask the questions. Are Illinois taxes really that high when one considers incentives and tax breaks? OK, so Texas’ state tax rate is lower and I understand the allure of moving to Texas, but Walgreens like many other corporations are no longer whipsawing U.S. states, they are saying to hell with all the states and denouncing their U.S. allegiance by exploiting the benefits of inversion. So are the red states taxes too high as well? Or is it the US tax rate that is too high. Again, I want to point out the difference between the nominal rate of 35% vs. Walgreens effective tax rate of 7.9%. Oh and another thing to consider, when corporations leave the burden falls on the individual tax payers. But, that burden is further compounded when those jobs like the ones in Deerfield IL are moved to Switzerland; there are less employed people in the pot to pay the deficits left by the inversion exploiters. I also read where Walgreens received $16.7 billion from Medicare & Medicaid in 2013. Should we maybe consider legislation to spend taxpayer dollars from Medicare & Medicaid to US based pharmacies? Or at least corporations that maintain their headquarters in the US. And I bet the savings that Walgreens realizes will still be spent on lobbying efforts to lessen the tax rate on the US operations that they still have to pay.

We hearken back to a conversation we had long ago. I agree with the targeted and temporary tariffRead More which allowed HD to get back on its feet and thrive. I tend to agree with you that as far as schools are concerned the primary focus needs to be on the teachers and the quality of education they produce as measured by the success of the students and budgets which allow the teachers to do their jobs.

I hope everyone who reads this knows that administrators negotiate their contracts with the schoolRead More board of their districts. Nothing to do with the teacher union, however they are part of the teacher retirement system. The other thing everyone should realize is that many of these superintendents come back as "consultants" to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars per year. I have been teaching for 30 years, every teacher I know would agree that there needs to be a cap on this type of retirement gouge. I could write a book about the waste in schools, all of it as the result of administrators trying to justifying their existence. G.O.M (above), you nailed it. Get rid of the federal department of education and the state department of education. What they do in no way makes me a better teacher!!

It's not surprising to see Roseland on the list. It has had to struggle with inadequate finances forRead More decades. It may serve Advocate well to consider siphoning a little bit of the cash they spend expanding Christ from lot line to lot line and use it to purchase this struggling institution. Then upgrade it's emergency room, as well as it's in and outpatient facilities. This would alleviate some of the pressure on Christ's emergency room and shorten the the ambulance ride for those who need it the most. Granted that there are great benefits to the economies of scale at Christ. However, such concentrated investment of resources in our hospital system leaves many areas of the city under served and ignored.

Voice of Reason, I never hid my opinions so what are you complaining about? Just got this email this morning. Where did the state get 2.5 million to give Naperville for yetRead More another sports complex ? ________________ From the Desk of Naperville Park District’s Executive Director Ray McGury Dear friend of the Naperville Park District: I’m pleased to inform you that earlier this week, Governor Pat Quinn announced the awarding of a $2.5 million grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to support the Naperville Park District’s construction of an Activity Center. As you’re probably aware, the District has been working diligently on this project. It began in 2013 with soliciting public feedback and demonstrating a need for a year-round facility that will support recreation for people of all ages, families, those with special needs and our senior residents. The Activity Center, which will be located at the corner of Quincy Avenue and Fort Hill Drive, also will encourage health and wellness for all ages, provide a place for teens to connect and address the recreational and social needs of our increasingly diverse population. Some of the planned Activity Center spaces include: • Sports courts • Gymnastics studio • Fitness spaces • Indoor playground • Indoor track • Café • Multi-purpose rooms for programs/events Currently, staff is working with the architect and engineering team to design the Activity Center; a draft concept can be found at www.napervilleparks.org/activitycenter. The remainder of this year will focus on design and permitting, with construction beginning in spring 2015. I know I speak for both the park board and staff when I say that this is a project that we’re very excited about and we look forward to providing residents with updates as the project progresses. Sincerely, Ray McGury Executive Director

I wish I understood why there is so much teacher hostility in our community. This was an articleRead More about the "idea" of an extended day and it turned into teacher bashing. Yes, I am a teacher. Yes, I have a decent salary to do so but I work very hard at making sure my kids are getting what they need. If I was told my day was to go to 5:00, it would make zero difference since that is my day everyday now. So many people put us down in these cowardless comment posts. Are we really that bad as teachers that you want us to make less? How would that fix anything? None of us went into teaching to be well off....none of us! We do it because we love it! 8 to 5 would make no difference to the extent of our passion for what we do. We just want the respect deserves as well educated and hard working professionals.
