Vocalist Nora Drysch Brings Big Band to The Birches

Nothing evokes fond memories and brings you back to another era like a familiar tune. Performer Nora Drysch recognizes the memory-inducing power of music and has been taking assisted living residents on a “Sentimental Journey” for over ten years.

On Tuesday, April 14 Drysch will perform her repertoire of Big Band classics at The Birches Assisted Living and get Birches residents “In the Mood” à la Glenn Miller.

Drysch will begin with 15 minutes of Big Band instrumentals during which she will distribute raffle tickets for a door prize raffle. She will then continue with one hour of Big Band vocal numbers intermingled with Big Band trivia questions and, of course, the raffle drawing.

For those unfamiliar with the musical style, a “big band” is a jazz-influenced ensemble usually consisting of woodwind, rhythm, and brass instruments. Drysch herself performs to a pre-recorded “big band.”

Big Band music first emerged between the late-1920s and early-1930s and became increasingly popular in the United States. Between the mid-1930s and mid-1940s, the Big Band era was in full swing—both literally and figuratively— as the era is remembered fondly for its signature swing dancing style.

According to Drysch, her program delights audiences of all ages but was specifically designed to entertain older adults. Over the years, Drysch has performed at assisted living communities, park district senior functions, church and senior association gatherings, reunions, libraries, and private parties throughout the Chicagoland area.

The Birches community looks forward to Drysch’s performance and what is sure to be an entertaining afternoon of memory-evoking music. Nora Drysch’s “Sentimental Journey” will take place at 2:00 pm in the Main Dining Room.
