The Birches Explores the Brain-Boosting Benefits of Red Wine

At The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills, sharing a glass of wine among friends is a no brainer.  For years, studies have shown that drinking red-wine in moderation is good for your health because it contains resveratrol, a potent antioxidant that benefits your heart and brain.

In order to reap the benefits of resveratrol, The Birches will host a French wine tasting in its Encore neighborhood on Thursday, April 24 at 2:30 pm. The theme of the tasting is “April in Paris,” an homage to the famous jazz song of the same name. The Birches’ Director of Dining Services Diana Subacuite will select wines for the tasting, which will be served with cheese and crackers.

The primary purpose of the event is to explore the brain-boosting benefits of red wine. Resveratrol, the antioxidant found abundantly in red wine, has been shown to prevent plaque buildups in the brain, which are a major factor in neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

Another important purpose of the event is to encourage socialization and engagement among The Birches community. The wine tasting will be structured as an open house that welcomes residents, family, and associates to visit The Birches memory care neighborhood, Encore. This provides Birches residents with an opportunity to get to know their neighbors in Encore a little better.

The French wine tasting is part of a Brain-Boosting Food and Drink series hosted by Encore throughout the year. In January, the Encore neighborhood hosted a tea party to explore the beneficial properties of the healthy beverage. In the summer, Encore will host a brain-boosting smoothie party, and in the fall they will host a dark-chocolate fondue party to complete the four-part series.
