A New Approach To Living with Memory Loss

In America alone, 5.2 million people have Alzheimer's Disease and 5 million of those inflicted with the disease are age 65 and older. Unfortunately, it is the 6th leading cause of death in America without a way to prevent it, cure it or even slow its progression. Although an Alzheimer's diagnosis is seen as a death sentence, it's a common misconception that Alzheimer's patients are incapable of enjoying the remainder of their days.

At The Birches, the Encore Memory Care Program specializes in experience and loving patience for residents with Alzheimer's and Dementia that are confused and forgetful. Encore's services and amenities have been designed to make life easier and more meaningful for our residents with dementia.

Janet Peters, an Encore resident, showcases that you do not need to stop living once you enter memory care. Janet gives artist presentations to fellow residents in order to educate them on art and keep her mind active. She recently gave her 5th presentation and this one focused on renowned American folk artist Grandma Moses. Janet chose Grandma Moses because she is a shining example of an individual who successfully began a career in the arts at an advanced age.

In order to prepare for the presentation, Janet spent many hours researching from books from local libraries that her daughter Eileen checks out for her. Janet told Katie Klitchman, Activities Director of the Birches, "I'm learning so much...put me on the calendar every month!".

For many of us, this dedication may seem like a lot of work especially for an individual who is suffering from memory issues. However, for Janet she claims it's not work if it's your passion.
