UPDATE: State Swim Champions—Western Springs' Mimi Schneider, St. Charles' Emma Smith, Downers Grove's Gabby Sims

UPDATE—Nov. 20

Western Springs' Mimi Schneider, a sophomore at Fenwick, won the 100-yard butterfly and swam with the teams that won all three relays and broke a state record during the finals at the state girls swim meet Saturday. She helped Fenwick to a second-place finish behind New Trier, which successfully defended its title.

Fenwick's sweep of the relays was only the third time that's been accomplished in the history of the girls state meet, the OakLeaves reported.

Emma Smith, a senior from St. Charles East, won the 200-yard individual medley. Gabby Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North, won the 100-yard backstroke.

Downers Grove North finished seventh among the 41 schools that scored points at the meet. Lyons Township was eighth, Hinsdale Central, ninth; St. Charles East, 13th; Glenbard West (Co-op) 14th; St. Charles North, 15th; and Benet Academy, 18th.

Here's some of the results from the state meet achieved by local athletes and schools:

200-Yard Freestyle

Elly Vitek, a junior from Lyons Township, finished third in a time of 1:50.97. Connie Hsu, a senior from Glenbard West, was fourth at 1:51.22. She told the Daily Herald the race resulted in her best time. Maddy Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North, was fifth at 1:51.70.

200-Yard Individual Medley

Senior Emma Smith from St. Charles East won the event in a time of 2:02.82, knocking nearly four seconds from her qualifying time, the Chicago Tribune reported. Megan Popp, a freshman from St. Charles North, was fourth at 2:05.46.

Diving

Megan Downey, a senior from Downers Grove North, was fifth with a score of 378.45. Taylor Kramer, a junior from Benet Academy, was sixth with 365.55.

100-Yard Butterfly

Sophomore Mimi Schneider from Fenwick won with a time of :53.57. Connie Hsu, a senior from Glenbard West Co-op was second at :54.66. Genna Heidkamp, a senior from Hinsdale Central, was fifth at :55.93. Gabby Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North, competing in the consolation finals, was eighth at :55.70. Lauren Zima, a senior from St. Charles North, was 11th at :56.91. Maddy Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North and Gabby's twin sister, was 12th in the state at :57.22.

100-Yard Freestyle

Elly Vitek, a junior from Lyons Township, tied for fourth with a time of :51.73. Her teammate, Louisa Hoffman, also a junior, was eighth at :51.89.

500-Yard Freestyle

Emma Smith, a senior from St. Charles East, was third in a time of 4:56.74. Cristina Favia, a senior from Benet, was seventh at 4:59.01. Abbey King, a senior from Hinsdale Central, was eighth at 4:59.89. Jennifer Weigand, a senior from Lyons Township, was 10th at 5:00.97. Kristen Worthington, a senior from Hinsdale Central, was 11th at 5:02.71.

100-Yard Backstroke

Gabby Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North, won the event with a time of :55.80. Hannah Lillioja, a senior from Hinsdale Central, was eighth at :57.38.

200-Yard Medley Relay

First Place—Fenwick in a time of 1:43.39. Maggie Sheean, sophomore, Haley Wickham, junior, Mimi Schneider sophomore and Maureen Barron, senior.

Seventh Place—Hinsdale Central in a time of 1:47.27. Hannah Lillioja, Lindsay Pavich, Genna Heidkamp and Jen Coady, all seniors.

Ninth Place—St. Charles North in a time of 1:48.29. Lauren Reynolds, senior, Meagan Popp, freshman, Lauren Zima, senior, Emily Ponte, junior.

200-Yard Freestyle Relay

First Place—Fenwick in a time of 1:34.04 Mimi Schneider, sophomore, Paulina Kaminski, sophomore, Haley Wickham, junior, and Maureen Barron, senior.

Sixth Place—Downers Grove North in a time of 1:36.11. Emily Albrecht, freshman, Maddy Sims, sophomore, Gabriele Serniute, freshman, and Gabby Sims, sophomore.

Eighth Place—Lyons Township in a time of 1:37.33. Louisa Hoffman, junior,  Kristine Rosenberger, junior, Jennifer Weigand, senior, and Elly Vitek, junior.

10th Place—Hinsdale Central in a time of 1:37.88. Lindsay Pavich, senior, Kerry Grosshans, junior, Jen Coady, senior, and Genna Heidkamp, senior.

400-Yard Freestyle Relay

First Place—Fenwick in a time of 3:25.22, breaking the state record, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. Paulina Kaminski, sophomore, Haley Wickham, junior, Maureen Barron, senior, and Mimi Schneider, sophomore.

Fourth Place—Downers Grove North in a time of 3:30.02. Gabriele Serniute, freshman, Maddy Sims, sophomore, Hannah Kaufmann, junior, and Gabby Sims sophomore.

Fifth Place—Lyons Township in a time of 3:30.86. Louisa Hoffman, junior, Kristine Rosenberger, junior, Jennifer Weigand, senior, and Elly Vitek, junior.

10th Place—Hinsdale Central in a time of 3:31.53. Fotini Kaufman, Abbey King, Jen Coady, and Genna Heidkamp, all seniors.

Here are some of the competitors from the western suburbs who advanced in yesterday's preliminary competition in the state girls swim and diving meet, as reported on the IHSA website. Competition in the finals continues today at New Trier High School in Winnetka.

200-Yard Freestyle

Elly Vitek, a junior from Lyons Township High School qualified for the championship finals with the third-fastest time of 1:50.61.

Connie Hsu, a senior with the Glenbard West Co-op, qualified fourth for the championship finals, in 1:51.41.

Maddy Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North, qualified sixth for the championship finals in 1:51.85.

200-Yard Individual Medley

Megan Popp, a freshman from St. Charles North, qualified second for the championship finals with a time of 2:04.58, sending her to the championship finals.

Emma Smith, a senior from St. Charles East, qualified fifth for the championship finals with a time of 2:06.26, sending her to the championship finals.

Diving

Meghan Downey, a senior from Downers Grove North, qualified fifth with a score of 270.90.

Taylor Kramer, a junior from Benet Academy in Lisle, qualified sixth with a score of 263.45.

100-Yard Butterfly

Mimi Schneider, a sophomore from Fenwick in Oak Park and a resident of Western Springs, qualified first for the championship finals with a time of :53.63.

Genna Heidkamp, a senior from Hinsdale Central, qualified third, for the championship finals, with a time of :55.33.

Connie Hsu, a senior with the Glenbard West Co-op, finished fourth in a time of 55.44, sending her on to the championship finals.

Gabby Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North, finished seventh in a time of :56.08, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Lauren Zima, a senior from St. Charles North, finished ninth in :56.23, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Maddy Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North, finished 11th with a time of :56.86, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Emma Smith, a senior from St. Charles East, finished fifth in a time of 4:57.48, sending her to the championship finals.

Jennifer Weigand, a senior from Lyons Township, finished seventh in a time of 4:59.22, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Abby King, a senior from Hinsdale Central, finished eighth with a time of 4:59.29, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Kristen Worthington, a senior from Hinsdale Central, finished ninth with a time of 5:00.70, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Cristina Favia, a senior from Benet Academy, finished 10th with a time of 5:00.87, qualifying for the consolation finals.

100-Yard Backstroke

Gabby Sims, a sophomore from Downers Grove North, qualified first in the state with a time of :55.21, sending her to the championship finals. The Chicago Tribune reported that the Sims family now has eight state championship medals in swimming, going back to 1980, when Dave Sims, the father of sisters Gabby and Maddy, won the 500-yard freestyle.

Hannah Lillioja, a senior from Hinsdale Central, finished 11th with a time of :57.97, qualifying for the consolation finals.

200-Yard Medley Relay

Fenwick's team of sophomore Maggie Sheean, junior Haley Wickham,
sophomore Mimi Schneider and senior Maureen Barron finished first with a time of 1:42.50, qualifying for the championship final.

Hinsdale Central's team of Hannah Lillioja, Lindsay Pavich, Genna Heidkamp and Jen Coady, all seniors, finished seventh in a time of 1:46.31, qualifying for the consolation finals.

St. Charles North's team of senior Lauren Reynolds, freshman Megan Popp, senior Lauren Zima and senior Allie Smith, finished ninth in a time of 1:48.02, qualifying for consolation finals.

200-Yard Freestyle Relay

Fenwick's team of sophomore Mimi Schneider, sophomore Paulina Kaminski, junior Haley Wickham, and senior Maureen Barron finished first with a time of 1:34.13, qualifying for the championship final.

Downers Grove North's team of freshman Emily Albrecht, sophomore Maddy Sims, freshman Gabriele Serniute and sophomore Gabby Sims finished sixth in a time of 1:36.22, qualifying for the championship finals.

Lyons Township's team of junior Louisa Hoffman, junior Kristine Rosenberger, senior Jennifer Weigand and junior Elly Vitek finished seventh in a time of 1:36.56, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Hinsdale Central's team of senior Lindsay Pavich, junior Kerry Grosshans, senior Jen Coady and senior Genna Heidkamp, finished ninth in a time of 1:37.14, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Lyons Township's team of junior Kristina Rosenberger, junior Louisa Hoffman, senior Jennifer Weigand and junior Elly Vitek finished sixth in a time of 3:30.58, qualifying for the state finals.

Hinsdale Central's team of Kristen Worthington, Jen Coady, Genna Heidkamp, and Abbey King, all seniors, finished ninth in a time of 3:31.97, qualifying for the consolation finals.

Area high schools will be well-represented at the IHSA Girls Swimming and Diving State Final Meet, to be held Friday and Saturday at New Trier Township High School in Winnetka.

Check in with Patch on Saturday and Sunday for updates who qualified and who won medals.

Lisle's Benet Academy has qualifiers in all 12 events.

Hinsdale Central has qualifiers in 11 of 12 events while Lyons Township and each have qualifiers in nine.

Downers Grove North has the top qualifier in three events: sophomore Gabby Sims in both the 100-yard Backstroke and 100-yard Butterfly, and its 200-yard Freestyle Relay team. 

Senior Emma Smith of is the top qualifier in the 200-yard Individual Medley and comes in with the second best sectional time in the 500-yard Freestyle.

Wheaton North Co-op, Glenbard West Co-op, York and Hinsdale South all have state qualifiers, as well.
