Girls Tennis: Red Devils Seek 6th State Title in 7 Years

Hinsdale Central won the Lyons Township Sectional over the weekend and will be among the teams to beat this weekend at the state tournament in Buffalo Grove.

Hinsdale Central's girls tennis team won the Lyons Township Sectional title Saturday after its doubles teams finished 1-2 and two singles players placed in the top four.

The Red Devils' 24 points bested second-place Lyons Township's 17 and ensured Hinsdale Central will have a chance to defend its 2011 team state title.

Seniors Marika Cusick and Caroline Lorenzini beat senior Tiffany Chen and junior Katie Lee, 6-4, 6-3, in an all-Red-Devil doubles final.

According to Hinsdale Central head coach Robin Kramer, it was Cusick and Lorenzini's third straight sectional title, and the doubles pair will go for the first-ever state title three-peat in doubles at this week's state tournament, which begins Thursday at Buffalo Grove High School.

In singles, junior Alex Solovyev and freshman Sophia Haleas qualified for state with second- and fourth-place finishes, respectively.

The Red Devils haven't had an individual state champion since Cece Cahill's back-to-back titles in 1985 and 1986.

With Saturday's title, the Hinsdale Central team completed the season with a 25-1 dual meet record, a West Suburban Silver Conference championship and a sectional championship.

The state tournament runs Thursday through Saturday.
