Girls Tennis: Hinsdale Central Finishes Second at State

Alex Solovyev lost in the singles final while the two-time defending champion doubles team of Marika Cusick and Caroline Lorenzini finished third.

The Red Devils had top-three finishers in both the singles and doubles brackets at the IHSA girls tennis state tournament this weekend, but it wasn't quite enough to defend their team title.

Doubles champs Maddie Lipp and Christina Zordani led Lake Forest to the top of the standings. The Scouts had 39 points, three ahead of Hinsdale Central and 11 ahead of third-place New Trier.

Alex Solovyev was the top Red Devils finisher. The junior made it all the way to the state title match, but lost to Wheaton-Warrenville South's Keisha Clousing, 6-4, 6-1. Lyons Township's Alex Chatt finished third.

The two-time defending champion doubles team of Marika Cusick and Caroline Lorenzini were perfect through the first two days of competition, but lost in the semifinals to Lipp and Zordani.

Cusick and Lorenzini, both seniors, beat Alexxis Kiven and Kaylin Dong of Stevenson in the third-place match. Tracy Kuhle and Amy Kuhle of St. Teresa finished in second.

Cusick and Lorenzini were going for the first-ever state doubles three-peat.

Senior Tiffany Chen and junior Katie Lee, Hinsdale Central's other qualifying doubles team, made it to the fifth round of the consolation bracket. The team went 3-2 from Thursday to Saturday.

Red Devils singles qualifier Sophia Haleas fell in the fourth consolation round. She finished with a 3-2 record, as well.

Lake Forest (2010, 2012) and Hinsdale Central (2006-2009, 2011) have won the last seven team titles.
