Football: Hinsdale Central Celebrates Homecoming With Win Over Hinsdale South

For the second straight week, the Red Devils had to come from behind in the second half to beat a rival opponent.

Hinsdale South quarterback DJ Deolitsis gashed the Hinsdale Central defense for two long touchdowns in the first half, but the Red Devils came from behind for the second straight week and beat the Hornets, 34-27, in Saturday's Homecoming game at Dickinson Field in Hinsdale.

Senior Hinsdale Central quarterback Brian Owens completed 15 of 24 passes for 319 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, outdueling South's Deolitsis, who ran for 211 yards and threw for 166. 

Deolitsis had touchdown runs of 75 and 58 yards in a first half that ended with the Hornets up 21-13. 

"I just did my job and it was there," Deolitsis said of the two scores. "It's what I've got to do."

Senior Red Devils linebacker Andrew Pyle said Deolitsis did a good job of making guys miss on those big runs.

"We didn't really have our assignments," Pyle said. 

The Red Devils (5-1) made adjustments after those runs, Pyle said, and after posting 157 rushing yards in the first half, Deolitsis was held to 54 in the second half. Hinsdale Central scored three touchdowns on its first four possessions after halftime, two by senior running back Jack Adams, to take a 34-21 lead. 

Hinsdale South (4-2) cut the lead to seven points and got the ball back late, but an interception over the middle made by senior safety Andrew Eck sealed the win for Central.

"They made adjustments and we weren't executing," Deolitsis said of the second half. 

The senior quarterback, who also had two passing touchdowns, was able to stay positive and was happy with the way his team hung with their rivals.

"We've been getting pounded in this rivalry for the last 10 years," Deolitsis said. "I'm just proud of my team."

It's the second game in a row the Red Devils have come from behind in the second half. On Sept. 21, , after trailing 17-14 at halftime.

Adams finished with 111 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 15 carries. Senior receiver John Claussen caught both touchdown passes from Owens, who also ran for one score.

"We're on a pretty good roll," linebacker Pyle said. "We're going to be tough come playoff time."

The Red Devils play Friday at home against Oak Park River Forest. The Hornets play at Morton.
