Five Red Devil Athletes Sign With NCAA Division I Schools

Hinsdale Central seniors signed their letters of intent to colleges that include Stanford University and University of Michigan.

Five seniors signed letters of intent this week to play at NCAA Division I schools.

Sam Bloom, an all-state boys tennis player for the Red Devils, will be attending Boston College. Girls volleyball team outside hitter Ally Davis is heading to Michigan, while all-state girls lacrosse team member Alex Olsen will play at the University of New Hampshire.

Two swimmers, Danny Thomson and Jen Coady, have committed to Stanford and Illinois, respectively.

A second-team all-state defender in 2011, Olsen was named to the Under Armour All-American Lacrosse Midwest team in 2010. She helped lead the Red Devils to a runner-up finish in the Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association title game last June.

Bloom, who placed sixth in singles at last spring’s state tournament, competed in several tournaments last summer throughout the Midwest and across the country. He also was considering Northwestern, Michigan, Notre Dame and William and Mary. His brother, Augie, plays collegiately at Princeton.

Davis, a four-year starter for the Red Devils, helped power Hinsdale Central to a 20-18 record and to the sectional semifinals. She owns both the school’s single season and career records for kills and blocks.

This season, Davis piled up 307 kills, 179 digs, 30 service aces and 22 blocks.

Thomson is one of the top 18-and-under swimmers in the country. A multiple state champion, Thomson won both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle state titles as a junior. He also captured the 500 freestyle state crown as a sophomore.

Thomson isn’t the only Hinsdale Central product at Stanford. Toni Kokenis is beginning her sophomore year on Stanford’s women’s basketball team.

Meanwhile, another Red Devil swimming star, Coady, will join her sister, Sarah, on the Fighting Illini women’s swim team next year. Sarah helped lead the Red Devils to second place at the 2008 state meet.

Jen Coady finished ninth at last year’s state meet in the 200-yard individual medley and also competed on three Red Devil state-qualifying relay squads. The Red Devils are taking part in the LT sectional this weekend with the hope of sending enough state qualifiers to next week’s state meet to top their sixth-place finish of a year ago.
