Teacher Raises Approved by D86 Board

Teachers will receive bumps in salary this year and next after negotiations were reopened in accordance with their current contract with the District 86 board.

The District 86 Board of Education approved Monday night an agreement with the district’s teachers’ union that will provide pay bumps for the current school year and 2013-14.

Board members came out of a closed-session discussion following their regular business meeting at Hinsdale South High School and voted 6-1 to approve the agreement with the Hinsdale High School Teachers Association (HHSTA), one that had been under negotiation since last spring.

The Doings reported that, under Monday’s agreement, teachers at the top of their pay grade who did not receive a “step” increase this year will get a .5 percent raise for the current school year, retroactive to July 1. Those who received step increases this year will not get a raise.

Next year, The Doings' story reads, all teacher salaries will get a 1.23 percent bump, whether a teacher received a step increase or not.

Dianne Barrett cast the lone “no” vote Monday. Dennis Brennan, Kay Gallo, DeeDee Gorgol, Michael Kuhn, Jennifer Planson and Richard Skoda all voted to approve.

There was no public discussion among board members before the vote.

The HHSTA did their part and ratified the agreement last week.

The current four-year contract between District 86 and the HHSTA began with the 2010-11 school year and runs through the 2013-14 school year. A clause in the contract, however, allowed for the reopening of negotiations on salary, extra-duty compensation and health insurance for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.

"Anything to do with salary and benefits," Superintendent Nick Wahl said earlier this month.

Those negotiations were reopened last spring before numerous bargaining sessions between HHSTA and District 86 representatives.

Congratulations to Dr. Jane Dillon, who as her patient while in private practice, I have known to beRead More a caring, skilled, and excellent doctor when I had serious medical problems related to my ears. While her new position will help many, I personally will miss her being in private practice.
