How Will HMS Off-Days Be Made Up?

Hinsdale Middle School students could have as many as five off-days that the rest of the district's students won't have.

------------

District 181 board members should hear in the near future how the administration believes unanticipated off-days at Hinsdale Middle School will be made up.

HMS students were off Friday for mold removal and cleaning. It was announced Saturday that Tuesday and Wednesday would also be off days, and on Sunday superintendent Renée Schuster said the break could last the entire week

The district addressed the issue of make-up days on its HMS facility updates website.

"In considering the calendar for the school year, the Board of Education will have several options," the site reads. "District leaders will present those options to the Board at a future meeting. HMS families and staff should be aware that previously scheduled non-attendance days may be recommended as attendance days for HMS to offset missed school days."

Director of communications Bridget McGuiggan said in an email Sunday that that approach remains in effect.

"An administrator will continue working with [Illinois State Board of Education] and the [Regional Office of Education] to confirm all available options for any school closure make up days and anticipate presenting some initial information during the meeting we will hold on Wednesday or Thursday," McGuiggan said.

An emergency board meeting is taking place Monday at Elm School at 7 p.m. The board is expected to act on a recommendation by district consultants to cancel class through Friday.
