Hinsdale Central Places High on U.S. News & World Report High School Rankings

U.S. News & World Report releases the fourth edition of its ranking of high schools around the country.

Sixteen area high schools are ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s evaluation of nearly 22,000 American public high schools.

The rankings were released as part of the Best High School rankings, now in its fourth edition.

The methodology to produce the rankings included test scores, state assessments and college-level coursework, such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, both of which include college-level courses. U.S. News & World explained its methodology here

Schools were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards, how well they prepare students for college, and other factors.

is the only west-suburban school that received a gold medal.

Hinsdale Central was the No. 235 high school nationwide, and No. 6 in Illinois, behind Northside College Prep (No. 1), Walter Payton College Prep (No. 2), Jones College Prep (No. 3), Whitney Young (No. 4), and Adlai Stevenson (No. 5).

Among the factors that contributed to that rating is the school's 62 percent Advanced Placement (AP) participation, 85 percent reading proficiency, and 88 percent math proficiency, according to U.S. News & World.

All the other ranked schools in the area are silver medalists. For the complete list, click here. Then filter by state to see all of Illinois’ ranked schools.

Impressive considering the Illinois schools, 1-4, are selective enrollment.

Shout-out to my school, Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minn., which placed 14th on the Minnesota list. Not too shabby.
