Ex-D86 Superintendent Wahl Takes New Job in Indiana

Nicholas Wahl has been hired to lead Carmel Clay Schools in Carmel, Ind.

One day after former District 86 Superintendent Nicholas Wahl's resignation was made official, a school board in Indiana announced Tuesday it will hire Wahl as its top administrator.

And it appears pay is not behind the lateral move.

Wahl is set to become the superintendent for Carmel Clay Schools in Carmel, Ind., according to Indianapolis' WISH TV, pending its board's final approval of his contract on Aug. 28.

The District 86 superintendent of eight years will be making significantly less in his new position than he was in Hinsdale.

WISH TV reports Wahl's starting base salary in Carmel will be $195,000. That's more than $58,000 less than his 2012-13 District 86 base salary of $253,040, which can be found here on the District 86 website.

Wahl last week submitted a request for a resignation agreement with the District 86 board that would allow him to leave without serving a 120-day notification period stipulated in his contract, Board President Claudia Manley said Monday.

His resignation was "unexpected," the board president said, and board members were not aware of his future plans at the time.

A Ferdinand, Ind., native, Wahl began his teaching career in Indiana before eventually making his way to Illinois and serving as the superintendent of District 201 in Westmont and District 86, WISH reports.

"Being a native of Indiana, Carmel Clay Schools have always been viewed as a premier school corporation," Wahl was quoted as saying. "The opportunity to return home and to be a part of Carmel Clay Schools is both an honor and a privilege."

Carmel is located immediately north of Indianapolis.
