Hospital offers free lecture on knee treatment

Hinsdale – Don't let arthritic knee pain debilitate you before seeking relief. Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is now offering an innovative treatment option for those suffering from early to mid-stage osteoarthritis.

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 7, Dr. Michael Durkin, an orthopedic surgeon who treats patients at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, will offer a free lecture regarding the MAKOplasty partial knee resurfacing technology. The event will be held at the Community House, 415 W. Eighth St., Hinsdale.

This minimally invasive procedure is a much different than traditional knee or even partial knee replacement surgery. First, the diseased portion of the knee is resurfaced to spare healthy tissue and bone. Then, an implant is inserted to restore normal movement.

For patients, this means less pain, shorter recovery time and a faster return to work; full knee replacement surgeries can require 12 weeks of recovery time. The MAKOplasty procedure may be done on an outpatient or inpatient basis.

When should you consider MAKOplasty? If your osteoarthritis pain is no longer controlled through medication, steroid injections or physical therapy and you have no more than two areas of knee damage, you might be a candidate for this treatment option.
