District 86 Considers Options for Making Up Snow Days

The following information comes from the Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Committee of a Whole board briefs newsletter:

As a result of four school closings this winter due to extreme cold and snow, Superintendent Bruce Law brought a recommendation before the board to name June 12, 2014 as the last day of school provided no additional emergency days are needed.

Law assured the Board, community and anxious seniors that graduation dates would not be impacted by a change in the last day of school. Hinsdale Central's graduation will continue to be held at 7 p.m. on May 29 and Hinsdale South's graduation will be held at 7 p.m. on May 30.

Further discussion and final adoption of a last day of school is scheduled for the March 17 meeting.

Law’s recommendation was targeted at maintaining the 181 days of crucial instruction/student attendance established by the regular school year calendar and utilizing emergency days communicated to students, staff, parents and community members as the school year commenced.

Discussion on the matter ranged from utilizing holidays, spring break, or late-start days to recapture some of the lost instructional time — to focusing only on recapturing the two days lost in the second semester.

Law will consider the points of view presented and bring a final proposal to the Board on March 17. Hinsdale Central Graduation: Hinsdale South Graduation: Thursday, May 29, 2014, 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, 7:00 p.m.
