Village of Clarendon Hills Will Save 10% on Electricity

Board OKs supply contracts with Exelon.

The Village of Clarendon Hills will save more than $4,200 a year on electricity costs for the next three years.

"That savings of $4200 is almost 10 percent of our electricity costs. The savings will assist us in maintaining some of our vital services like public safety and public works," said Peg Hartnett, Clarendon Hills finance director. Clarendon Hills spent $44,000 on electricity during the last fiscal year.

The savings comes from the Village Board's decision to hire the Rock River Energy Services Cooperative as a broker to seek bids from energy providers.

"The state owes us four months of income taxes right now. They are behind in their payments. That's a big hit to the village." Hartnett said. Hartnett said the village was looking for ways to cut costs wherever they could.

"Every thousand dollars counts," said Robert Bahan, Clarendon Hills village manager.

Rock River Energy was able to secure more competitive pricing based on the ability to pool the energy needs of the municipalities it represents and purchase higher volumes of electricity.

The lowest electricity bid came in from the Exelon Energy Co., which is owned by the same parent company as Commonwealth Edison. The board signed two contracts with Exelon on Aug. 18. The first contract covers the village's street lighting for two years. The second contract covers non-street lighting for the next three years.
