Clarendon Hills Trustees Discuss Sewer, Road Repair

Trustees discuss street repair from the Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District work.

Clarandon Hills trustees and residents shared concerns over the state of village roads following sewer work by the Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District during the March 7 board of trustees meeting.

Residents were particularly concerned over temporary patches on the roads, which make for rough travelling, said Christina Collison, the village’s management analyst.

Collison said the trenches dug for the sewer lines were approximately 30 feet below ground.

The water reclamation project is a sanitary relief sewer that runs through sections of Hinsdale, Westmont and Clarendon Hills. The project includes more than $14 million in improvements that will help relieve possible flooding of sanitary sewer lines during heavy rainfalls.

She said the Flagg Creek crews could not immediately pave over the trenches because the ground needed time to settle. If they paved too early, the pavement could buckle, causing severe potholes, she said. As a temporary fix gravel was used to even out the surfaces, but over time the gravel has settled and has made for a rough ride in some areas, Collison said.

She said the village is working on formulating a timeline with the reclamation district when they will be able to make permanent repairs to the driving surfaces. But what kinds of repairs is a topic of contention. Collison said there has been some question over what repairs are to be made to the streets by the Flagg Creek contractors working on the project. Collison said the village expects curb to curb repairs on the road, but the company is balking at that kind of job due to funding.

Work was expected to be completed by March 7 on Park Avenue to where it intersected Western Avenue. Park Avenue had been closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. during that phase of construction. Construction on West Park Avenue is expected to continue through May.

In addition to discussion of the water reclamation project, the board unanimously passed an omnibus agenda that included an authorization for landscaping services with TLC Group, Ltd. in the amount of $15,119.

The omnibus budget also included renewal of a contract to purchase rock salt for the village.
