New Garfield Stop Signs Go Up at 1st Street

The signs will make the intersection of 1st and Garfield streets a four-way stop.

Well, that was quick.

Eight days after , two new stop signs on Garfield Street at 1st Street will go up after Wednesday's morning rush hour, Deputy Chief Mark Wodka said.

In addition to the two new north-south stop signs and accompanying advisory signs, Wodka said stop signs will also be placed in the middle of Garfield "to bring additional attention and to allow motorists to adjust to the new signage in place."

There were worries expressed at the Jan. 24 meeting that southbound drivers would be unable to see the new stop sign at the northwest corner when delivery trucks are double-parked outside Dips & Dogs. The temporary middle-of-the-road signs will help if that's the case.

Wodka said the police department will study traffic at the intersection over the next several weeks to see how drivers react to the new traffic control and what habits develop.

The police department proposed the new signs after they were justified by a traffic study that began in late December and showed significant enough pedestrian traffic and sight obstructions at the intersection, which in addition to Dips & Dogs features  (HMS) on the southwest corner.

The traffic study was prompted by  by one vehicle that was passing another vehicle that had stopped while waiting to turn left onto 1st.
