Last Day to File Petitions for Village and District Board Seats

Hinsdale caucus candidates currently are running unopposed.

Barring any last-minute candidate petition filings, six candidates will run unopposed in local elections this spring.

During the consolidated elections scheduled for April 5, Hinsdale voters will choose three village board members and three library board members.

Current Hinsdale trustee J. Kimberly Angelo is one of the candidates who has filed a petition. Although he's already on the board, this will be his first time running for election. Angelo was appointed to his current position in 2009 to fill the seat vacated by Tom Cauley, when Cauley was elected village president.

The other two candidates for the village board include Chris Elder and William Haarlow.  Elder is a certified public accountant and currently serves as a member of Hinsdale's Finance Commission. Haarlow currently serves as chairman for the Hinsdale Zoning Board of Appeals. Both are active in community organizations.

Each village trustee serves a four-year, unpaid term. Three new trustees are chosen every two years.

Current Library Board President Johanna Delaney is seeking re-election to the Hinsdale library board of trustees. She was first elected to the board in 2007 and elected as its president in 2009.

The other two candidates for the library board are Victoria Bush-Joseph and Connie Nelson. Bush-Joseph is an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School. Nelson is a retired marketing and advertising executive. Both are active in local civic organizations.

The deadline for submitting candidacy petitions is 5 p.m. on Monday. Village officials say the Internet has made things less predictable when it comes to knowing how many people will run in the spring elections.

"Before, we could tell how many people were interested in running for office based on how many candidacy application packets were submitted," said Bruton. "But now, everything's available online, so candidates don't even come to Village Hall to pick up petition packets anymore."

Even so, Christine Bruton, deputy village clerk for Hinsdale, said that based on her experience, it would not be a surprise for the candidates to run unopposed during consolidated elections.

"This is pretty much the norm. We're not really expecting any more candidacy packets to be turned in for these elections," said Bruton.

During the consolidated elections, voters also will be voting for people to fill four four-year term seats on the board of Consolidated Community School District 181.

All six candidates running for Hinsdale positions were endorsed by the Hinsdale Village Caucus Dec.1.
