Hinsdale Trustee Doug Geoga Not Running for Re-election

Hinsdale village trustee Doug Geoga will not be seeking a second term on the Village of Hinsdale Board of Trustees in the April 2013 municipal election.

Geoga, who is currently the chairman of the board’s Administrative and Community Affairs (ACA) Committee, said he and his wife have become “empty-nesters” since his 2009 election to the board and the couple is considering a move to Chicago to be closer to the Art Institute of Chicago, where Geoga’s wife currently studies.

“I wouldn’t run for re-election if I thought that there was a possibility that I wouldn’t be able to serve out a term,” Geoga said Tuesday.

As ACA chairman Geoga’s been a leading voice on the board’s budgetary and financial matters, but he said every trustee during his tenure has “assumed significant responsibility” in that realm and Hinsdale's current board is not one that relies on certain trustees to carry out specific roles.

“I’m proud of the progress that we’ve made in our fiscal stewardship, but I don’t think that I am uniquely qualified to play that role,” Geoga said.

The trustee said whoever serves as the next ACA chairperson will assume those duties.

With trustees Laura LaPlaca and Bob Saigh expected to run for re-election in the spring along with Village President Tom Cauley, Geoga thinks the board will benefit from having at least one new perspective.

“I think the new board is going to be very well constituted and I’m optimistic that the village will be in good hands,” Geoga said.

Would-be newcomer Jerry Hughes is expected to be endorsed by the Hinsdale Village Caucus at its Wednesday night meeting along with LaPlaca and Saigh.

Cauley is not eligible to get the endorsement of the caucus since its bylaws only allow for endorsing one-term village presidents. Cauley did, however, get the endorsement of the caucus’ nominating committee.  

Election day is April 9, 2013, but those interested in running for the Village of Hinsdale Board of Trustees must file their paperwork with the village between Dec. 17 and Dec. 24.
